Michael Stewart and Jack Buchanan share Dunhill Links lead with opening 65s
Golfers Michael Stewart and Jack Buchanan, both ranked outside the world top 750, shot matching seven-under 65s on Thursday to share the first-round lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship across Scotland.
Opening round at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns
Michael Stewart and Jack Buchanan took a share of the first-round lead at the 25th Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after carding matching seven-under-par 65s on Thursday. Both players sit outside the top 750 in the official world rankings, with Stewart ranked No. 979 and Buchanan ranked No. 788. Stewart produced a bogey-free round at Carnoustie, opening with a birdie on the third hole before recording an eagle at the par-5 12th and four consecutive birdies on the inward stretch. Buchanan matched that 65 at Kingsbarns, compiling seven birdies in an error-free round to join Stewart atop the 168-player field.
Stewart's turnaround from developmental tour
Stewart entered the $5 million DP World Tour event without playing a practice round, having competed in the Tartan Pro Tour's Duddingston Classic from Monday through Wednesday. The 36-year-old Scotsman earned £2,365 for finishing second in that £20,000 event before arriving at Carnoustie for a 10:00 tee time, having learned of his sponsor exemption on Monday. Stewart, who won the 2008 Scottish Boys' Championship and the 2010 Scottish Amateur Championship, had appeared in only five DP World Tour tournaments prior to this week, with his last appearance coming in 2023.
We were very fortunate with the wind direction that we got because the back nine tends to show its teeth around this place and the front nine was the nine that was showing its teeth today. On the back nine, if you were hitting good shots, you were going to have a lot of chances. So I was fortunate to hit some good shots and then convert my chances.
- Stewart receives a sponsor exemption for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
- Competes in the Duddingston Classic on the Tartan Pro Tour, finishing second.
- Tees off at Carnoustie without playing a practice round.
- Cards a bogey-free seven-under 65 to claim a share of the lead.
Strong showings from South African contingent
South African players established a presence near the top of the leaderboard across the three tournament venues. Casey Jarvis recorded a six-under 66 at Carnoustie, while compatriot MJ Daffue posted an identical 66 at Kingsbarns to sit one stroke behind the co-leaders. Five additional South Africans, including four-time European tour winner Dean Burmester, featured in a seven-way tie for fifth place on five-under par. The tournament format rotates 168 professionals and their amateur partners across Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, and the Old Course at St Andrews over three days before Sunday's final round.

Tour regulars and course incidents
Former tournament winners and established tour players posted mixed results during their opening rounds. Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2023 champion who won the Open de France the previous week, opened with a four-under 68 at Carnoustie. Brooks Koepka carded a three-under 69, while Tommy Fleetwood finished two-under and two-time champion Pádraig Harrington recovered from a 38 on his front nine to sign for a one-under 71. Defending champion Bob MacIntyre also shot a one-under 71 at Carnoustie, though his round included a confrontation with tournament officials regarding a television drone near the par-3 eighth hole.
It drives me insane. I've had previous for it.
Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter made their first DP World Tour appearances in nearly four years, posting one-under at St Andrews and level par at Carnoustie respectively, with Bubba Watson matching Poulter on even par.
