Orange alert triggers for Bouches-du-Rhône and Var

Météo-France placed the Bouches-du-Rhône and Var departments under an orange vigilance for thunderstorms on Saturday morning, with the alert bulletin released before 05:00. The warning takes effect at 14:00 for Bouches-du-Rhône and 16:00 for Var, remaining active through the afternoon and night. The orange level, the second-highest on the French meteorological service's four-tier scale, indicates that dangerous weather is expected and residents should be prepared to modify their plans.

How the storms will unfold

The day's weather is expected to evolve in two phases. During the morning, thunderstorms over the Golfe du Lion began producing heavy downpours, with rainfall concentrated into bursts of one to two hours. Météo-France cautioned that these storms could bring intense lightning and hail even before the orange alert officially began.

On Saturday morning, storms forming over the Gulf of Lion could produce locally heavy rainfall over one to two hours, along with strong electrical activity and hail.

By Saturday afternoon, the storm activity over the sea and the Languedoc region will shift eastward, reaching Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Météo-France identified the coastal strip as the area facing the highest risk of violent weather, including both torrential rain and hail. The service described the approaching storms as particularly active, warning that they would pack a combination of destructive hail and flooding downpours.

The storms present at sea or over Languedoc will shift towards the PACA region. Coastal areas seem most exposed to violent phenomena (heavy precipitation and hail). These storms could be particularly active, dumping 50 to 80 mm, locally up to 100 mm on the coast.

Precipitation and flood hazard

The rainfall forecast is the central concern. Over a short period, coastal locations could see between 50 and 80 millimetres of rain, with isolated spots receiving up to 100 millimetres. Such totals, falling in urban areas like Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) and Toulon (Var), risk overwhelming drainage systems and causing flash flooding. Hail can also damage vehicles and crops, while frequent lightning poses a threat to anyone outdoors. The alert remains active through the evening, and further bulletins will be issued as conditions evolve.
