Launch in Spanish pharmacies

Novo Nordisk presented the oral version of Wegovy in Spain on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, making Spain the fifth country in the world where the tablet is available. Pharmacies have stocked it since 1 November. Until now the drug was sold only as an injectable pen. The tablet contains semaglutide, the same molecule as the injection, and it can only be dispensed with a prescription. Paula Barriga, general director of the Danish drugmaker, presented the treatment and described the moment in these words:

“We are facing a new era in weight control in Spain.”

Who it is for and how it works

The approved use covers adults with obesity, meaning a body mass index of 30 kg/m2 or higher, and adults with overweight (a BMI of 27 to 30 kg/m2) who also have at least one weight-related condition, provided they do not have type 2 diabetes. Albert Goday, professor of endocrinology at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, detailed these criteria in the launch coverage. The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) explains that the tablet belongs to the same drug family as Ozempic and acts on brain regions that control appetite, so that people feel fuller and eat less. The agency adds that Wegovy 'can help prevent a heart disease'. The pill is taken once a day, preferably in the morning after at least eight hours of fasting, and it must be combined with a low-calorie diet and more physical activity. It does not need refrigeration.

In the OASIS 4 clinical trial, the 25 mg oral dose produced an average weight loss of about 17%, according to results communicated by the drugmaker. One in three participants lost 20% or more of their weight. The same company data, as reported in Spain, puts the figure at up to 34.4% for one in three people when the drug was used together with lifestyle interventions.

Price, funding and competition

A 30-tablet pack of the 25 mg dose costs 236 euros, although La Vanguardia gives 236.20 euros for the same pack. The other doses are priced lower: 179.89 euros for both the 1.5 mg and 4 mg packs, and 200.19 euros for the 9 mg pack. The Spanish National Health System does not fund the treatment, so patients pay the full cost. Barriga said the company has held talks with the Ministry of Health since 2024 to reach a 'favourable equation' for future public funding, and she noted that no drug of this class for obesity or overweight is funded in Spain. Lilly's Mounjaro, also sold on prescription and outside public funding, is already on the Spanish market as a competitor.

Approvals and market background

The United States Food and Drug Administration approved the Wegovy pill in December 2025. The European Medicines Agency followed in July, when its Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use issued a favourable opinion and the European Commission then approved the product. Background in the coverage recalls that in 2023 Novo Nordisk became the most valuable company in Europe, with a market value of 428,000 million dollars, ahead of the French luxury group LVMH. Its share value then fell about 70% in July 2024, and the downward trend has continued since.

What comes next

The tablet is on sale in Spain, but no public funding has been agreed yet. The company says it is still negotiating with the Ministry of Health on a funding arrangement. Until a decision is reached, patients who want the pill must pay the full price and obtain a prescription from a health professional. Pharmacies dispense it as a daily tablet taken with the fasting routine and diet changes described by the manufacturer.
