OpenAI introduces visual display ads to ChatGPT during image generation
The format will begin testing in the United States in late October 2026 for Free and Go tiers, displaying commercial images while prompts are processed.
Visual advertising rollout
OpenAI announced on Monday, 5 October 2026, that it will introduce visual display advertisements inside ChatGPT. The new format displays brand imagery, product showcases, and service experiences directly on screen while the platform processes and generates image requests. Initial testing will launch later in October 2026 in the United States with a select group of commercial advertisers. OpenAI stated that the sponsored images will remain distinctly separate from the user-generated creations and will not alter or influence the chatbot's conversational outputs. Users will also be able to explore products and ask follow-up questions about sponsored items directly through the chat interface.
Monetization tiers and contextual guardrails
The visual advertising format is restricted to users on the unpaid Free and low-cost Go subscription tiers. Premium and institutional subscriptions, including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, will remain free of all advertising. OpenAI implemented safety guardrails to ensure advertisements do not appear during sensitive or inappropriate exchanges. Commercial messaging is automatically blocked when users discuss topics related to personal health, mental wellbeing, or emotionally vulnerable situations. The visual format represents an evolution from OpenAI's earlier text-based ads, which were first introduced in February 2026 and featured sponsor names, logos, and website links beneath text answers.

Operational costs and market reach
The expansion of ChatGPT Ads aims to monetize a global audience that OpenAI states has reached 1.2 billion weekly active users. OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022 without subscriptions or advertising, introducing the paid ChatGPT Plus tier two months later before adding enterprise tiers. Running generative artificial intelligence models across this user base costs tens of billions of dollars each year, with image generation requiring particularly intensive computing resources. The company stated that advertising revenue allows it to maintain free access for a broader demographic than subscription fees alone can address, while facing competition from rival tools such as Meta's free agentic AI app Muse.
We will continue to evolve our ad platform with new formats and capabilities to help businesses reach customers in useful and relevant ways and provide opportunities for businesses of all sizes to grow and thrive.
Ad measurement and partner ecosystem
To support the ad network, OpenAI expanded its integrations across data, attribution, and analytics platforms. The company added conversion and audience tracking integrations with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp. Click attribution tools include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. For advanced full-funnel measurement, OpenAI is working with Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL, while partnering with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to run geolocation-based ad effectiveness experiments. Brand suitability evaluation pilots are also underway with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to verify ad placement environments.
