20-year-old German man fatally stabs bank employee, holds two hostage in Regensburg; arrested after three-hour standoff

The attack

On Thursday, July 23, 2026, a 20-year-old German man entered a bank branch in the Prüfening district of western Regensburg and stabbed a man with a knife. The victim, later reported by Bild to be a bank employee, suffered life-threatening injuries. Emergency calls reached Bavarian police around 15:00 local time (some reports cite 14:50). The attacker remained inside the building with at least two other people, prompting authorities to treat the incident as a possible hostage-taking.

Police response and cordon

A massive police operation unfolded within minutes. Heavily armed officers from the SEK special intervention unit, negotiators, and a helicopter were deployed to the scene. The bank occupies the ground floor of a multi-storey complex that also houses apartments and shops, located near the Danube river. Police sealed off the entire area and urged residents to stay away. A spokesperson told the Passauer Neue Presse:

We currently believe that the suspect is inside the building -- we are cordoning off the entire area with a large contingent of officers.

Another police statement stressed: "The protection of the population has top priority for us."

Hostage situation and rescue

For roughly three hours, the suspect held two people inside the bank. Officers initially had only visual contact with the severely injured victim. Rescue workers later managed to provide first aid and transported him to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Special forces eventually extracted the two hostages unharmed. The suspect was arrested around 18:00 without resistance and led away in a white hooded suit. No injuries were reported among police or the rescued individuals.

who "obviously had no chance." The suspect, a German national, acted alone and was armed only with a knife. He made no explicit demands during the incident, according to police. Authorities are investigating the case as murder and attempted robbery.

Investigation and reactions

After the arrest, police continued to search the building and said the operation was not yet complete. The motive remains unclear; investigators are considering both robbery and intentional killing. Regensburg's mayor Thomas Burger (SPD) described the afternoon as

hours of great uncertainty

and expressed his deepest condolences to the victim's family. Herrmann said his thoughts were with the family and relatives. Police reiterated that there was no wider threat to the public.
