Nuno Markl wins Personality of the Year at Globos de Ouro following stroke recovery

Recognition at the Coliseu dos Recreios

Portuguese television presenter and humorist Nuno Markl received the Personality of the Year award in the entertainment category at the 2026 Globos de Ouro on Saturday, 26 September. The annual ceremony, broadcast live by network SIC and hosted by Clara de Sousa, took place at the Coliseu dos Recreios in central Lisbon. Markl secured the individual honour against a field of four fellow nominees, including Cesar Mourao, Diana Chaves, Joao Baiao, and Manuel Luis Goucha. He walked onto the stage with the aid of a cane, supported directly by his sister Ana Markl and his son Pedro Markl. Later in the broadcast, Markl returned to the stage to collect the trophy for Best Project in Entertainment for the RTP television show Taskmaster. Co-host Vasco Palmeirim appeared alongside him to celebrate the victory and confirmed that RTP will broadcast a new season of the show next year.

Tributes to emergency services and medical staff

Markl used his acceptance speech, read directly from his mobile phone, to reflect on his medical emergency and thank the teams responsible for his survival and recovery. He recounted suffering two strokes in his bathroom on 20 November, joking about the circumstance before dedicating the award to healthcare workers across Portugal. He thanked National Health Service personnel who treated him, as well as the firefighters from Parede who responded to the initial emergency call. A key moment of the speech focused on his son Pedro, who administered initial assistance and dialled emergency services when the event occurred. Markl also acknowledged close friends Ricardo Araujo Pereira and Ana Galvao, alongside rehabilitation professionals from Hospital do Mar who attended the ceremony in the audience. In a separate category, comedian Bruno Nogueira won Best Project in Humor for his RTP series Ruido, delivering a satirical acceptance speech referencing Markl's past five nominations.

Mobility hurdles in Lisbon and recovery reflections

Following the ceremony, Markl published a detailed account on Instagram addressing the accessibility barriers he encountered while travelling through Lisbon. He explained that navigating traditional Portuguese cobblestones and uneven street paving proved exhausting with both a walking stick and a wheelchair. Despite the physical strain, Markl noted that spectators gathered outside the Coliseu dos Recreios greeted him with an impromptu street ovation before he entered the hall. He also wore a tailored outfit arranged by his partner Teresa and assembled by Portuguese tailors Rosa Teixeira. In his public comments, Markl discussed the emotional reality of undergoing speech and motor rehabilitation, explaining that regaining the ability to embrace others with both arms remains his primary objective as he continues his work in film and daily radio.

It is difficult to be happy with two strokes crippling the body, but it is wonderful to experience moments of happiness: doing radio, making a movie, winning a Globe for Personality of the Year and another for Taskmaster, but above all, loving and being loved by those who matter.
