Former Mayor of Porto Nuno Cardoso died in the early hours of Monday at Hospital de Santo António in Porto at the age of 64.
Following his death, the current Mayor of Porto, Pedro Duarte, signed an executive order decreeing two days of municipal mourning on 8 and 9 September 2026. Because an extraordinary municipal council meeting could not convene immediately, Duarte signed the measure on Monday for ratification at the executive meeting on Tuesday. In addition to the municipal tribute, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto declared two days of institutional mourning starting on Monday. Cardoso maintained ties with the charitable institution for over two decades, serving as an honorary brother from 2000 and holding administrative positions in its General Assembly Bureau across several terms between 2007 and 2016.
Political career and urban transformation
An engineer by training, Cardoso served as a university professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and led Águas do Douro e Paiva.
He stepped into the leadership of Porto City Hall between 1999 and 2002 after succeeding Fernando Gomes, who departed the municipal administration to join the national government. During his mayoral term, Cardoso oversaw key urban and infrastructure portfolios, directing the expansion of the Metro do Porto network and organizing the Porto 2001 European Capital of Culture initiative. Earlier in 2026, Mayor Duarte presented Cardoso with the City Medal of Honour to recognize his public contributions. Cardoso also contested subsequent mayoral elections as an independent candidate, running in 2013 and again in the October 2025 municipal elections for the Nós Cidadãos!/PPM coalition, where he received 2,190 votes.

Former Porto mayors from across the political spectrum also expressed their sorrow. Rui Rio, who headed the city council from 2002 to 2013 for the PSD/CDS-PP coalition, described the outcome as unjust.

The Porto District Federation of the Socialist Party (PS) released a statement expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to Cardoso's family and colleagues. Former Matosinhos mayor Narciso Miranda described Cardoso as a composed figure who defended democracy and freedom, recalling his regular presence at a monthly civic discussion group in Matosinhos. Football club FC Porto also issued an official message of condolence, noting Cardoso's decades of civic engagement alongside his dedicated support for the sports club. The club praised his long-standing connection to the city and the public initiatives he championed throughout his career.
