North Rhine-Westphalia opens applications for €22,000 NRW-Pressefoto 2026 award
Photojournalists based in North Rhine-Westphalia have until 31 October to submit published news images for the 22,000-euro prize, which includes a special category for sports photography.
Application launch and prize distribution
The state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in the capital city of Düsseldorf has initiated the official submission period for the NRW-Pressefoto 2026 journalism competition. The annual award carries an overall prize endowment of 22,000 euros, which is distributed across multiple distinct categories to honour regional photojournalism. Professional photographers who maintain their primary legal residence within North Rhine-Westphalia are eligible to submit candidate images starting immediately. For the 2026 competition cycle, parliamentary organizers have established a dedicated special award focusing specifically on sports photography alongside the standard competitive rankings. The prize seeks to honour visual reporting that documents the political, cultural, and social events shaping the federal state.
Eligibility criteria and submission rules
The competition guidelines establish explicit requirements regarding professional background, geographical location, and publication history. Entrants must be active predominantly as journalistic photographers, ensuring that the competition focuses on news reporting rather than commercial advertising or amateur snapshots. All candidate photographs must have been captured during the twelve-month period immediately preceding the official submission deadline. In addition to this timeframe, every submitted photograph must have already appeared in print or digital journalistic media outlets. The subject matter of each entry must directly reflect recent current affairs and maintain a verifiable, substantive connection to North Rhine-Westphalia.
Jury assessment and the newcomer category
The evaluation and selection process is conducted by an independent jury specifically appointed by the state parliament in Düsseldorf. This panel examines all eligible submissions to choose the first, second, and third place recipients in the main contest. In addition to the primary podium positions and the dedicated sports photography category, the competition features a separate newcomer award intended to support rising visual journalists. Photographers entering the newcomer division must not be older than 30 years of age on the final submission cutoff date. For this youth category, the appointed jury selects two finalist images, leaving the ultimate decision to an open public vote between the two nominees.
Parliamentary ceremony and year-end exhibition
Addressing the start of the application phase, the president of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament, André Kuper, described the diverse spectrum of regional subjects eligible for entry.
They can be thoughtful moments, natural disasters or beautiful moments from the neighbourhood. This year is already rich in images that move people.
Kuper stated that the competition formally honours the contribution of professional photojournalists to democratic life and public awareness. All award winners across the various categories will be celebrated during a formal ceremony at the state parliament in Düsseldorf on 8 December 2026. Following the awards presentation, the state parliament will open a public exhibition at the end of the year, displaying the winning and nominated photographs as an annual retrospective of the state in press photos.
