Lando Norris signs McLaren contract extension through 2030 with multi-year option

Lando Norris has signed a contract extension keeping him at McLaren until at least the end of 2030. The agreement includes a multi-year option to prolong his stay beyond that date. The 26-year-old British driver announced the extension on Saturday morning during McLaren's annual family and friends open day at the team's factory in Woking. Although his previous long-term contract signed in early 2024 covered the 2026 season, the new deal locks him in for at least four additional years. As part of the contract agreement, McLaren presented Norris with the MCL39 chassis that he drove to his maiden drivers' championship last season. Norris stated that reaching an agreement was straightforward, noting that he had made no approaches to rival teams and intends to remain with McLaren for the remainder of his career.

Nine-year progression with McLaren

Norris joined McLaren's young driver programme in 2017 at the age of 17, initially serving as a test and simulator driver before making his Formula 1 race debut in 2019 at age 19. Across 163 Grands Prix, he has become the longest-serving driver in the team's history. Norris claimed his first career Formula 1 victory in Miami in 2024, helping McLaren secure its first constructors' championship in 26 years while he finished as runner-up in the drivers' standings. In the 2025 season, Norris collected seven Grand Prix wins and edged Red Bull driver Max Verstappen by two points at the Abu Dhabi season finale to win his first world title. The 2025 victory ended McLaren's 17-year wait for a drivers' crown, its first since Lewis Hamilton won in 2008, while securing back-to-back constructors' championships for the team.

Team stability and financial context

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Norris for his role in rebuilding the outfit into championship winners over the past nine years. The extension secures driver continuity alongside Australian teammate Oscar Piastri, who signed a multi-year extension early in 2025 that runs until at least 2028. Financial terms of Norris's contract were not publicly disclosed by McLaren. Norris acknowledged that his salary does not match figures reported for other front-running drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton's estimated $60 million (€52 million) annual salary at Ferrari and Max Verstappen's reported $100 million (€86 million) yearly Red Bull agreement. Stella affirmed that pairing Norris and Piastri gives McLaren one of the closest and most competitive driver lineups in the paddock.

Current campaign and title defence

McLaren faced performance deficits early in the 2026 season under revised technical regulations before recent car upgrades restored competitive front-running speed. Norris enters the upcoming Italian Grand Prix in Monza following consecutive victories at the Hungaroring in Hungary and Zandvoort in the Netherlands. In the 2026 drivers' championship standings, Norris sits in fourth place, trailing Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli by 83 points with 11 races remaining on the calendar. Across his Formula 1 career to date, Norris has achieved 13 race wins, 18 pole positions, and 48 podium finishes, all recorded with McLaren.
