Drone strike hits minibus in occupied Luhansk

On 26 August 2026, a targeted drone strike hit a passenger minibus travelling through the Russian-occupied Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine, killing nine people. The civilian vehicle was carrying 15 passengers along a route between Lysychansk and Kadiivka, which is also known by its Russian name Stakhanov. Regional occupation officials noted that the strike took place specifically along the road linking the settlements of Zolote and Pervomaisk. The attacked roadway is situated roughly 50 kilometres behind the front line. Eight passengers died immediately at the scene of the strike, while a 20-year-old woman died from severe injuries after being rushed to hospital intensive care. Moscow-installed regional governor Leonid Pasechnik announced the casualty figures across official Telegram and Max accounts, describing the drone strike as a deliberate targeted attack.

This is another act of terrorism perpetrated by the bloodthirsty Kyiv regime. Cynical, inhumane and unjustifiable. It is a war crime, for which those responsible will be punished as they deserve.

Passenger injuries and regional damage

The minibus strike resulted in multiple additional injuries among the remaining people on board. Pasechnik confirmed that the wounded included the mother of the deceased 20-year-old woman as well as an 18-year-old woman. Emergency accounts reported that five passengers sustained injuries, leading to the hospitalisation of at least one victim, while the minibus driver received medical treatment directly at the scene. Other regional accounts reported a total of six wounded individuals. Although Moscow officials accused Ukrainian forces of intentionally targeting the vehicle, the government in Kyiv has routinely maintained that its military operations do not target civilian infrastructure or non-combatants.

Missile attacks reported across Donetsk

In the neighbouring Donetsk province, local occupation officials reported a separate Ukrainian missile bombardment against the regional capital on the same day. Denis Pushilin, the pro-Russian governor of the Donetsk region, stated that the missile attack wounded at least three civilians, including a child. Local media sources reported hearing four to five separate explosions across the city, while videos posted to social media showed thick clouds of black smoke rising from urban districts. Russian media accounts indicated that cruise missiles struck a neighbourhood that houses a large commercial shopping centre. Local information channels indicated that the casualty count in Donetsk could rise further as rescue workers inspect the blast sites.

Rising casualty figures and stalled diplomacy

The strikes in Luhansk and Donetsk occurred as international observers documented an increase in civilian casualties. Data from the United Nations indicated that more than 400 civilians died in July, representing a sharp upward trend in fatalities occurring far beyond active battle lines. More than four years after Russia launched its invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has expanded its use of drones and cruise missiles against Russian military and logistical positions in occupied territories. Diplomatic initiatives led by the United States to negotiate a ceasefire remain stalled, with Moscow refusing to moderate its demands over Luhansk, which Russian forces control almost entirely. Earlier in the week, Vatican emissary Paul Richard Gallagher travelled to Moscow, appealing to both governments to respect international humanitarian law and bring fighting to an end as soon as possible.
