Andalusia extinguishes Niebla wildfire after 15 days and 33,000 hectares burned

Emergency crews in Andalusia declared the Niebla wildfire fully extinguished on Friday night after flames burned 33,000 hectares across eleven municipalities.

Extinction after two weeks of combat

The Andalusian Forest Fire Extinction Service (Plan Infoca) officially declared the wildfire in Niebla extinguished at 21:00 on Friday, 21 August. The blaze started on the afternoon of 6 August in the Raboconejo area, near kilometre 13 of the HU-3106 road in Huelva province. Over fifteen days, flames burned through 33,000 hectares across eleven municipalities, making it the largest recorded wildfire in Andalusia. Early assessments had projected up to 38,000 hectares of damage, but unburned pockets of vegetation survived within the estimated 210-kilometre perimeter. Firefighters brought the blaze under control on Thursday before completing final liquidations on Friday evening. Antonio Sanz, the first vice president and councillor for the presidency and emergencies of Andalusia, confirmed the conclusion of operations on social media.

This puts an end to this complex, difficult and dangerous fire, which was conditioned by wind changes, the terrain, the large available fuel load, thermal inversion and convective phenomena.

Environmental toll across protected corridors

The burned territory surpasses the 27,800 hectares destroyed by the Minas de Riotinto fire in 2004, which previously stood as Andalusia's largest wildfire. Satellite surveillance confirmed the final 33,000-hectare footprint, which caused extensive damage to regional ecosystems. Flames burned roughly 80% of the La Pata del Caballo natural area, a protected site of more than 7,000 hectares situated between Escacena del Campo and Paterna del Campo. This protected zone serves as a key ecological corridor connecting Doñana National Park and the Condado countryside with the foothills of Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche. The loss of vegetative cover across this corridor presents long-term challenges for regional wildlife connectivity and watershed stability.

Evacuations and emergency response

Extreme fire behavior and erratic wind shifts forced emergency coordinators to alter suppression strategies every few hours during peak activity. The blaze prompted the evacuation of more than 700 residents from villages and hamlets across Huelva and Seville provinces. Flames advanced east into Seville province, reaching boundaries near El Madroño and Aznalcóllar, while also affecting areas around Berrocal in Huelva. At the height of the intervention, nearly 800 personnel deployed to the front lines, including Infoca specialists, the Military Emergency Unit (UME), and municipal firefighter consortiums from Huelva and Seville. Ground teams transitioned to mop-up operations on Thursday with 21 personnel and two fire engines to extinguish lingering hotspots before the final call.

Agricultural aid and recovery plans

With active flames extinguished, regional authorities shifted focus toward economic relief and agricultural restoration across the affected municipalities. The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development joined the Regional Ministry of Sustainability and Environment to prepare a formal natural disaster declaration. This measure addresses severe production losses sustained by local beekeepers and extensive livestock farmers in Huelva and Seville. Regional officials plan to submit the formal declaration at the upcoming Governing Council meeting to release recovery funds. Municipal authorities across the eleven impacted jurisdictions have begun inventorying property damage and clearing perimeter roads to restore local access.
