Los Angeles prosecutors rule out death penalty for Nick Reiner in parents' killings

Nick Reiner is accused of killing his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, inside their Brentwood residence in December 2025. Hochman stated before a court hearing that the maximum penalty Reiner faces if convicted is life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hochman added that the trial will not begin in 2026, with the defendant continuing to plead not guilty while held without bail.

Hochman confirmed his office held discussions with Nick Reiner's siblings, Jake Reiner and Romy Reiner, who communicated their positions on the matter. Rob and Michele Reiner were long-standing opponents of capital punishment. Before his death, Rob Reiner publicly praised Erika Kirk for forgiving Tyler Robinson, the man charged with the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The December 2025 Brentwood homicides

The killings occurred following a 13 December 2025 holiday gathering at the home of comedian Conan O'Brien, which Nick Reiner attended with his parents alongside guests including Billy Crystal. On 14 December 2025, a scheduled massage therapist arrived at the Reiner residence and received no response at the door. The therapist contacted Romy Reiner, who entered the home and discovered the body of her 78-year-old father. First responders arrived shortly after and located 70-year-old Michele Reiner dead in the primary bedroom. The Los Angeles County medical examiner determined both victims died from multiple sharp force injuries. Police officers arrested Nick Reiner near the University of Southern California campus later that day, roughly 21 kilometers from the crime scene.

Indictment details and defense trust dispute

A Los Angeles grand jury returned an indictment on 20 July 2026 that was unsealed the following month, charging Nick Reiner with two counts of first-degree murder. The indictment includes special circumstances allegations of lying in wait and personal use of a dangerous weapon, specifically a knife. Superior Court Judge Sam Ohta previously sealed grand jury transcripts after requests from the defense and the surviving siblings to limit pretrial exposure.

The case also involves an inheritance conflict over a $1.5 million trust fund established by the parents in 1993.
