Former Lord of the Dance performer Niamh Flatley dies in Dublin at 52
The former Riverdance and Lord of the Dance performer passed away at the Beacon Hospital in south Dublin following an extended illness.
Passing at Beacon Hospital
Niamh Flatley, the former lead dancer with Lord of the Dance and wife of Michael Flatley, died at the age of 52 on 5 October 2026. She passed away at the Beacon Hospital in south Dublin following a period of illness that had required dedicated medical care over the previous few weeks. Friends of the family noted that she had been only hours away from being flown to the United States to receive specialist medical treatment. Her husband spent every waking hour caring for her throughout her extended period of ill health before her death. The Flatley and O'Brien families released a statement requesting privacy as they navigate the loss, while expressing gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who attended to her.
Stage career and touring productions
Born Niamh O'Brien and raised in County Meath, she started dancing at age three and competed at an elite international level during her teenage years. At age 17, she placed fourth in the world Irish dancing championships before shifting from competitive dance to commercial performances. In 1994, she danced as part of the Riverdance lineup during the Eurovision Song Contest interval performance, which marked her first meeting with Michael Flatley. She went on to perform lead roles in globally touring productions including Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames, and Celtic Tiger. Despite experiencing severe health issues for several years, she continued to work on the productions, collaborating directly with costume designers, dancers, and service providers.
Marriage and family life
The pair began dating in 2006 and held their wedding in October of that year in Fermoy, County Cork. Their marriage ceremony occurred at a church situated three kilometres from Castlehyde, the Palladian-style ancestral home of Ireland's first president, Douglas Hyde, which Michael Flatley purchased in 1999 and restored. The couple welcomed their only child, son Michael St James, in 2007. Michael Flatley previously credited her with providing vital support during his own past health struggles, recounting how she comforted him when he received a cancer diagnosis by phone around Christmas in 2022. In August 2026, the couple travelled together to Monaco to attend the 90th birthday celebration of businessman Michael Smurfit.
