ZUS rolls out redesigned retirement ID cards with new anti-fraud features; old green cards stay valid
From 13 July 2026, Poland's Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) began issuing redesigned retirement and pensioner ID cards. The plastic version gets advanced anti-counterfeiting elements and a grey-blue look, while the digital mLegitymacja in the mObywatel app is simplified. Existing cards remain valid with no mandatory exchange.
What changed
On Monday, 13 July 2026, new designs for both the physical and digital versions of Poland's pensioner ID card took effect. The update introduces modernised plastic cards made of single-side laminated PVC and a cleaner digital version in the state mObywatel app. ZUS stressed that the card's function stays the same, only its appearance and security level change.
The changes are a step towards even greater security of our beneficiaries' data. The traditional plastic card has gained modern safeguards that protect the document against counterfeiting more effectively. We are also refreshing the look of the mLegitymacja in the mObywatel app, simplifying its structure by removing the ZUS branch information.
New physical card features
The updated plastic card now comes in grey-blue, replacing the earlier green design. It is produced from PVC and laminated on the front side. The document includes several new security elements. A guilloche pattern (a complex web of fine lines) forms the background, and microprint invisible to the naked eye is added. Each card also bears a unique serial number permanently applied during blank production. Under UV light the card shows no luminescence, further complicating forgery. Articles noted that the earlier green cards did not meet modern security printing standards set by the Ministry of Interior and Administration, making them easier to counterfeit.
Digital mLegitymacja simplified
In the mObywatel app the electronic ID (mLegitymacja) now has a cleaner layout. The most visible change is the removal of the ZUS branch that issued the document. ZUS explained that with central state registers this information is no longer relevant. The app version also includes protections against fake screenshots. mLegitymacja has been available since January 2023 and is issued automatically to anyone who acquires the right to a pension or disability benefit. It works identically to the physical card, confirming entitlement to statutory discounts.
What it means for pensioners
There is no obligation to swap old cards. All green plastic IDs and digital versions issued before 13 July remain valid until their expiry date. Pensioners do not need to visit ZUS offices or submit any forms. The new plastic cards will be given only to people who apply for a physical ID after the cut-off date, while the digital version is updated automatically for holders. ZUS spokesman Wojciech Dyląg confirmed that nobody loses existing entitlements and the process requires no action from beneficiaries.
The process happens automatically and no one will lose their current rights. Old cards remain fully valid for the period indicated on them, so there is no need to file any applications or visit ZUS branches.
Background and timeline
The redesign follows new legal regulations that came into force in July 2026. ZUS indicated that the previous designs lacked sufficient printing safeguards. The digital mLegitymacja has been operating since January 2023 and is free to download. Both the plastic and electronic versions can be used in parallel, with the plastic card available only on request, while the digital document is issued automatically.
