Robin Fellhauer scores fastest Bundesliga goal as Neuer error gifts Augsburg lead over Bayern
Robin Fellhauer put Augsburg ahead within seconds of kick-off at the WWK Arena after Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer mishandled a pass back to him. Sources time the goal between six and 8.4 seconds.
The goal
Robin Fellhauer gave Augsburg a 1-0 lead over Bayern Munich at the WWK Arena on Saturday, within seconds of kick-off. According to SRF, Luis Diaz passed the ball back to Neuer after the restart, but the ball bounced away from the goalkeeper's foot. Neuer then tried to chip the ball over the advancing Augsburg midfielder, and Fellhauer charged down the attempt, collected the loose ball and ran alone toward the empty goal. The New York Times described the error as Neuer dallying in possession before attempting the chip.
How fast it was
Sources give different times for the goal. RTBF and Le Soir put it at six seconds, SRF and Der Standard at eight, The New York Times at seven and a half, and Spiegel Online and Le Figaro at 8.4 seconds. Under any of these figures, the goal beat the previous Bundesliga record of nine seconds. Karim Bellarabi set that mark for Bayer Leverkusen against Borussia Dortmund in August 2014, and Kevin Volland equalled it for Hoffenheim against Bayern in August 2015. Spiegel Online notes that Volland's goal also came against Neuer.

Bayern and the table
Bayern are two points off the top of the Bundesliga, according to The New York Times, and were looking to capitalise on the league leaders' position. Borussia Dortmund were 2-0 up in the 85th minute of their match against Werder Bremen on Friday, before two goals in four minutes from the away side left them with a draw. The New York Times also points out that two of the quickest goals in Bundesliga history have now been scored against Bayern, who have won the competition 34 times, more than any other club combined.
Spiegel Online adds that Augsburg was the only Bundesliga side to beat Bayern in last season's title-winning campaign, which prevented Bayern from a season without defeat, a feat Bayer Leverkusen had previously achieved. The current record list shows Fellhauer's eight seconds ahead of Volland and Bellarabi at nine seconds each, according to SRF's compilation.
- Fellhauer (Augsburg, 2026)
- 8 seconds
- Volland (Hoffenheim, 2015)
- 9 seconds
- Bellarabi (Leverkusen, 2014)
- 9 seconds
Reactions and status
RTBF described Vincent Kompany's sceptical look on the touchline after the goal as conveying the size of his goalkeeper's technical error. Le Figaro, which published a video of the goal, called it a gross error by the Bayern goalkeeper. Spiegel Online called Neuer a goalkeeping legend and described the mistake as a huge blunder that came only seconds into the match. SRF's report noted that the match was still in progress when its article was published.
