Netherlands returns to Eurovision for 2027 contest with NPO-led independent team

Public broadcaster takeover

The Netherlands will return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027 following a one-year absence from the competition, Dutch public broadcasting umbrella NPO announced on 23 September 2026. Under the new organizational framework, NPO will manage the Dutch entry directly rather than delegating the responsibility to an individual member broadcaster. An independent team of specialists will handle the selection and guidance of the performing artist. News and current affairs broadcaster NOS agreed to broadcast the live semi-finals and final, as well as preview programs and commentary. NOS stated that the assignment fits its statutory duty to provide coverage of large international events.

Broadcaster divisions over Israel

The structural change follows the decision by AVROTROS, the broadcaster responsible for Dutch entries since 2014, to pull out of the competition. AVROTROS announced in August 2026 that it would not take part due to the European Broadcasting Union's ongoing inclusion of Israel. The broadcaster cited the humanitarian suffering in Gaza, threats to press freedom, and Israeli government efforts to influence the 2025 voting as factors that stripped the contest of its neutrality. AVROTROS had demanded clear regulations barring nations engaged in military conflict, viewing the EBU's subsequent rule preventing conflict-involved countries from hosting as inadequate. Other Dutch association broadcasters declined to take over, with BNNVARA and KRO-NCRV endorsing the boycott and Omroep MAX director Jan Slagter dismissing interest during an appearance on the talk show Renze.

Discussions with the European Broadcasting Union

Faced with universal reluctance among member broadcasters, NPO sought an extension past the EBU's 15 September deadline before taking direct control. NPO board chair Jet de Ranitz acknowledged that participation evokes mixed feelings across the Netherlands during a period of geopolitical polarization. In negotiations with the EBU, De Ranitz requested that organizers emphasize the contest's original founding principle from after the Second World War, which aimed to unify European populations.

We are seeking that connection again now, by paying attention to what is happening in the world and giving that conversation a place. To help shape and convey that direction, we as Dutch public broadcasting want to be part of the Eurovision Song Contest again.

European context and Burgas 2027 schedule

The 2027 event will take place at Arena Burgas in Bulgaria, following the victory of Bulgarian singer Dara at the contest in Vienna. At the Vienna edition, the Netherlands broadcast the competition through NOS and NTR with commentary from Henry Schut and Jeroen Kijk in de Vegte, but did not enter an act, marking the country's first competitive absence in 24 years. Spain, Ireland, Iceland, and Slovenia also boycotted the contest alongside the Netherlands. Ireland has confirmed it will not participate in 2027 either, while discussions continue in Spain, and Belgian broadcaster VRT received an extension from the EBU. The 2027 competition will feature semi-finals on 11 and 13 May, followed by the grand final on 15 May in Burgas.
