Neon announces open-source SCP Foundation movie under Creative Commons license to rival A24

Competing studio projects

Film distributor Neon announced plans on 30 September 2026 to produce an open-source horror anthology feature based on the SCP Foundation mythos. The announcement places Neon in direct competition with rival studio A24, which earlier in September 2026 acquired its own SCP Foundation film project from Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios. Both distributors have slated their respective theatrical releases for 2027. Neon stated that internal development on its adaptation began prior to A24's public acquisition announcement. While A24 did not engage with the online writing collective prior to its reveal, Neon initiated discussions with site administrators to ensure alignment with community licensing guidelines.

Creative Commons licensing terms

The SCP Foundation began in 2008 as a collaborative web platform where contributors publish speculative fiction and horror files detailing a fictional organization that captures and contains anomalous entities. Because the site operates under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA) license, all derivative adaptations must follow open-licensing rules. Neon committed to releasing its completed film and associated assets under the CC BY-SA license, ensuring the studio will not retain exclusive long-term control over the work. Under these provisions, third-party creators will remain free to copy, adapt, screen, and build upon the film, even for commercial gain, provided they credit the creators and apply the same license without asserting exclusive distribution arrangements.

Over its nearly two decades of existence and with thousands of contributors, the site has built an engaged, global fanbase and has inspired short films, web series and games.

Community response and anthology format

Neon's production will take the form of an anthology feature focusing on emerging horror filmmakers. The project is not an official production endorsed by the wiki administrators, as site staff do not receive financial compensation and are not participating in scripting or production. However, administrators issued a public statement validating the studio's licensing compliance following community friction surrounding A24's initial project announcement.

Genre pipeline at Neon

The SCP adaptation expands Neon's focus on horror and genre releases following the box office performance of titles such as Backrooms and Obsession. The studio recently finished production on 4 X 4: The Event, a horror title directed by Alex Ullom following his summer release It Ends. Neon's development slate also includes Osgood Perkins' The Young People, David Robert Mitchell's They Follow, Matt Johnson's The Vice Guide, and Arie and Chuko Esiri's Clarissa. The studio previously distributed Perkins' Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, alongside Oscar-winning releases such as Bong Joon Ho's Parasite and Sean Baker's Anora.
