Nawrocki heads to Washington for Trump's 80th birthday and UFC gala, as Tusk says he expects 'nothing'

Polish President Karol Nawrocki will travel to Washington on Sunday, 14 June, to attend a UFC mixed martial arts gala at the White House, held to mark Donald Trump's 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the United States. The visit, confirmed by Marcin Przydacz, head of the Presidential International Policy Bureau, follows a personal invitation Trump extended during a meeting in Davos in January.

A gala wrapped in controversy

The UFC Freedom 250 event has drawn sharp criticism in the United States. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only 16 percent of Americans consider it appropriate to stage a UFC gala on White House grounds, while 46 percent are opposed. Even among Republican voters, support stands at just 31 percent. A lawsuit filed by local residents argues the temporary arena on the South Lawn lacks the required permits and that public land is being used for private profit. Organisers have spent $60 million to build the venue, which features a steel octagon structure roughly 28 metres high and seating for up to 5,000 invited guests. An additional 85,000 fans will watch on screens in the nearby Ellipse park, while no free broadcast will be available; viewers must subscribe to a streaming platform costing at least $8.99 per month.

The main event and VIP access

The headline fight pits reigning UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria against interim champion Justin Gaethje, with both fighters entering the cage directly from the Oval Office. VIP packages priced at $1.5 million include South Lawn seats, a private reception, fighter weigh-ins, press conferences, a Zac Brown Band concert the night before, and a July UFC event featuring Conor McGregor. Military personnel were offered seats, but only if they met specific height and weight criteria.

Nawrocki's agenda: security and two gifts

Przydacz said Nawrocki will hold direct talks with Trump on Polish security, bilateral relations, and energy and economic cooperation. The discussion is expected to cover the permanent stationing of American troops in Poland. The Polish president will also attend a Mass and meet with the Polish diaspora, likely in a southern state rather than in Washington itself. Nawrocki will present Trump with two gifts: one personal and one of a state character, chosen to reflect the standing of Polish-American relations.

Tusk's one-word verdict

Prime Minister Donald Tusk was asked in the Sejm on Thursday what he expects from Nawrocki's trip. His reply was a single word: "Nothing." The exchange underscored the domestic political tension surrounding the visit, which Polish media report will not have the status of an official state visit.
