
NASA prepares Sunday launch for 4.3 billion dollar Roman Space Telescope on Falcon Heavy
The observatory will lift off from Kennedy Space Center at 7:26 a.m. ET on 30 August, traveling one million miles to Lagrange point 2 to survey dark energy and discover exoplanets.

NASA is scheduled to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 7:26 a.m. ET (13:26 Spanish time) on Sunday, 30 August 2026. The 4.3 billion dollar (£3.2 billion) observatory will lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, subject to summer weather conditions in Florida. The spacecraft, which matches the size and mass of a school bus or a Tyrannosaurus rex, will travel 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) to Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2. Roman will operate in the same orbital region as the James Webb Space Telescope while maintaining safe separation. The primary mission is planned to span five years, with researchers expecting potential operations to continue beyond that timeline.

Development history and spy satellite optics
The mission traces back to the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), which a decadal committee declared NASA's top large-scale astronomy priority in 2010. Initial plans stalled because planetary scientists showed little enthusiasm for the original five-foot mirror design.
It was very hard to get much enthusiasm.
In January 2011, NASA official Michael Moore received a call from the National Reconnaissance Office offering two unused 2.4-meter (nearly eight-foot) mirrors built for canceled spy satellites. NASA formally accepted the mirrors in 2012, which upgraded the telescope's optical capabilities to equal Hubble's mirror diameter.

The mission survived two rounds of proposed budget cancellations under the Trump administration. More than 1,000 personnel spent over a decade preparing the hardware, including over a year inside the eight-story clean room at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where the assembled telescope stood 40 feet high.
Survey instruments and exoplanet detection
Roman is equipped with a 300-megapixel infrared camera capable of capturing wide panoramas of deep space. The camera delivers the spatial resolution of Hubble while providing a field of view at least 100 times larger, with some estimates citing more than 200 times Hubble's area. Displaying a single full-resolution image would require more than 500,000 high-definition television screens. Each exposure will cover an area 1.5 times larger than the apparent disk of a full moon. Researchers, including United Kingdom astronomers, project the survey will identify more than 100,000 exoplanets and map billions of galaxies to measure the expansion rate driven by dark energy. The spacecraft also carries an experimental starlight-blocking coronagraph to image older, colder giant planets directly.
Integration with Hubble and James Webb
NASA renamed the observatory to honor Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, the agency's first chief of astronomy, who died in 2018. The Roman observatory is structured to operate collaboratively alongside Hubble, launched in 1990, and James Webb, launched in 2021. Roman will use its broad infrared vision to map wide regions of the sky and uncover targets of interest. Hubble will provide follow-up observations across ultraviolet, visible, and optical wavelengths, while James Webb utilizes its larger primary mirror to execute deep, highly detailed observations of specific targets identified by Roman.
