Thirteen years after his departure, José Mourinho begins his second stint on the Real Madrid bench with a contract running until 2029. His task is to win titles and impose order on a dressing room that has gone two seasons without a trophy and held early elections. The club has made six signings, headlined by 19-year-old winger Yan Diomandé, who emerged at Leganés, spent a year at RB Leipzig, and played the World Cup with Ivory Coast. The transfer fee is reported as 140 million euros by ABC and 125 million by La Razón. Vinicius has renewed to play on the left, with Mbappé as the central striker. For the third consecutive season, Real Madrid has no playmaker to replace Toni Kroos, leaving Valverde and Tchouaméni in the engine room. With Rodri having rejected the club, Bernardo, formerly of Manchester City, occupies the double pivot. The central defensive positions also remain a concern in the post-Kroos and post-Modrić era.

Barcelona chasing a third consecutive title

Hansi Flick's Barcelona aims for a third straight league title, a feat last achieved under Pep Guardiola, who won in 2009, 2010, and 2011. That run was broken in 2011-2012 by Mourinho's Real Madrid, which set a record with 100 points and 121 goals. Barcelona's attacking output over the past two seasons has been formidable: 102 and 95 goals scored, with only 39 and 36 conceded.

The squad has undergone changes. Robert Lewandowski's departure was announced in May, and Ferran Torres, scorer of the decisive goal in the World Cup final, left for PSG. New arrivals include Gordon, a winger who operates on the left, and Adeyemi. Lamine Yamal remains the undisputed leader of the team. The season is expected to renew the individual duel between Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, both wearing the number 10 of their respective clubs. Lamine Yamal arrives motivated to overcome a World Cup in which he was not decisive on the biggest stage, despite Spain's triumph. Mbappé seeks to move past two seasons in which he won only the European Super Cup upon arriving at Real Madrid. In the broader European investment landscape, the Premier League leads spending, followed by Serie A, with La Liga and the Bundesliga closely matched as the Spanish league seeks to overtake the German league for third place. Ligue 1, driven by PSG, rounds out the top five.

A staggered opening

La Liga 2026-2027, the 96th edition of the competition, opened on 14 August with Alavés-Getafe and Sevilla-Rayo, continues on 15 August with two further matches, and adds one more on Monday, with the remaining fixtures spread between 19 and 27 August.

Twelve days will pass before the full first-matchday table can be compiled. League officials justify the phased start as a way to extend rest for players involved in Spain's World Cup-winning campaign. The other major European leagues are scheduled to begin next weekend. The tournament arrives 83 days after the previous season ended and less than a month after Spain lifted the World Cup in New Jersey, with beaches still crowded with national-team shirts bearing the names of Pedri, Cucurella, and Lamine Yamal.
