A member of Portugal's National Republican Guard (GNR) was struck and injured on Sunday afternoon by a fleeing motorcyclist during an enforcement checkpoint in Costa da Caparica, within the Almada municipality of Setubal district. The collision occurred around 17:30 along the Estrada da Fonte da Telha, also designated locally as the Fonte da Telha military road, where GNR forces were carrying out a scheduled traffic stop operation. The motorcycle operator, who was travelling alone, approached the inspection area but refused to obey an explicit order to halt issued by the officer on duty. Instead of complying with the directive, the motorcyclist accelerated in an effort to escape the checkpoint. During the sudden evasion attempt, the motorcycle struck the GNR officer and continued moving away from the area without stopping.

Mobilization of emergency response teams

The Sub-regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of the Setubal Peninsula registered the formal emergency alert for the hit-and-run at 17:28. First response teams dispatched immediately to the location on the Fonte da Telha road to assist the injured military personnel and secure the immediate perimeter. The rescue effort involved a total of 12 operational personnel from multiple emergency and public security services, including the Cacilhas Volunteer Firefighters and the Trafaria Volunteer Firefighters. Technical and medical assistance was provided on scene by the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) alongside GNR officers. The coordinated emergency operations were supported on the ground by five dedicated vehicles dispatched to manage the medical response and traffic control.

Medical evaluation and hospital treatment

Paramedics and volunteer firefighters delivered immediate first aid to the struck officer directly on the roadside before arranging medical evacuation. According to law enforcement and emergency protection sources, the officer sustained light injuries primarily concentrated on his limbs, particularly his legs. After receiving stabilization at the scene, the officer was loaded into an emergency transport vehicle and taken to the emergency ward at Hospital Garcia de Orta, the main public hospital serving the Almada municipality. Hospital personnel admitted the military officer as a minor casualty to undergo clinical assessments, treatment for impact trauma, and continued observation.

Police search and district-wide investigation

The GNR, with participation from its National Traffic Unit (UNT), immediately opened operational inquiries to track down and detain the motorcyclist responsible for the collision. Law enforcement representatives confirmed that the suspect was operating the motorcycle without any passengers at the moment he ran down the officer. Patrols across the Costa da Caparica area and surrounding districts were placed on alert as officers began collecting statements and verifying movement records along local access roads. Security forces remain active in the Almada region to locate the fugitive driver and clarify all circumstances surrounding the disobedience and subsequent flight from the checkpoint.
