The explosion
An explosion occurred on Friday, 9 October 2026, at Motor Oil's facilities in Agioi Theodoroi, Corinthia. The sources differ on the timing: the company said the injuries happened at 11:00, Kathimerini placed the blast shortly after 11:30, and NEWS 24/7 said shortly before noon. Early information reported by Kathimerini said the explosion took place in an outdoor area of the plant. NewsIT, citing first information, said it happened during work on a hydrogen tank.
Injuries and hospital care
Motor Oil said two employees were seriously injured during extensive preventive maintenance at its refinery. According to the company, the workers received first aid and were taken to hospital in the company's own ambulances, and both were taken to the emergency department of Corinth Hospital. NEWS 24/7, citing its own information, reported that both were intubated because doctors judged their condition critical. Kathimerini, citing sources in the 6th Health Region, identified the two seriously injured as men aged 43 and 50. Kathimerini's early report said five people had been taken to hospital, with two in serious condition, while NEWS 24/7 and the company reported two injured.
