Montenegro kicks off PSD political season with football match ahead of 50th Festa do Pontal

The PSD kicked off its political season with a friendly football match in Loulé on 13 August, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Festa do Pontal. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, wearing the party's colours, scored at least one goal in a game that featured several government figures, including minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro, minister of Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz, and parliamentary leader Hugo Soares. Graça Carvalho served as the team's coach. The match pitted a team of national PSD officials against a side of local Algarve party representatives.

One notable absence drew journalists' attention: Luís Neves, the minister at the centre of controversy over management decisions during his time leading the Polícia Judiciária. Montenegro initially joked about the missing player.

The prime minister then offered a more serious explanation, noting that the match featured mainly party officials, while Neves is one of the independents who joined the government in a governmental capacity. Montenegro added that nothing would prevent Neves from participating in a future game.

Holiday controversy lingers

The football match came against the backdrop of a holiday controversy that has followed Montenegro since early August. The prime minister had stated he would not take holidays this summer in order to coordinate Government activity. However, on 6 August, Correio da Manhã captured images of Montenegro on Praia do Garrão in Almancil, in the Algarve, accompanied by his family and Hugo Soares. The photographs generated criticism from the opposition and online commentators who accused the head of government of breaking a promise.

When asked by SIC Notícias about the holiday issue during the match, Montenegro defended his position.

We are doing what we said we would do, which is to combine moments that allow some rest with governmental and party activity.

50 years of the Festa do Pontal

The Festa do Pontal, scheduled for 14 August on the Calçadão de Quarteira, marks its 50th edition this year. The event was founded five decades ago by Sá Carneiro and has since served as a platform for PSD leaders. Cavaco Silva cemented his leadership at the Pontal, and in 2017, Passos Coelho used the event to shift the party's tone on immigration. Montenegro has previously used the occasion to announce tax cuts and pension bonuses.

Montenegro described the gathering as reproducing the spirit of the original Pontal, with a period of socialising followed by political interventions on Friday.

Immigration on the agenda

In his speech at the Pontal, Montenegro pledged to continue pursuing more regulated but also more humanist immigration, despite what he described as setbacks that some legislative processes may face. He said the Portuguese had expressed their preference for this approach and expressed hope that legal actors would not make political judgments.
