AS Monaco Basket enters bankruptcy after court ruling on €27.9 million debt
Monaco's court of first instance declared AS Monaco Basket in cessation of payments over €27.9 million in liabilities, pausing the reigning French champion's professional operations and transferring the project to its amateur association.
Judicial ruling and financial liabilities
The court of first instance in Monaco issued a judgment on 6 October 2026 finding AS Monaco Basket in cessation of payments. Monaco general prosecutor Stéphane Thibault announced the ruling on Wednesday, citing an absence of available funds against €27,888,305.95 in known total liabilities. The commercial court set the provisional date for the cessation of payments back to 1 July 2026. A substantial portion of the club's debt stems from a €21.7 million loan granted earlier in 2026 by the Monegasque state through the Société nationale de financement (SNF) to maintain operations. Financial examiners confirmed that the club had depleted its liquidity, leaving its 21 staff members without salaries for the month of September.
The general prosecutor summarized the financial deficit in an official release.
an absence of any available assets, against known global liabilities of 27,888,305.95 euros
Regulatory setbacks and court appeals
The ruling follows a series of administrative rejections during the summer of 2026 as the organization attempted to preserve its status. After financial issues barred the club from returning to the EuroLeague and the French top division, management sought registration in Nationale 1 masculine (NM1), the French third tier. The French Basketball Federation (FFBB) rejected the NM1 registration in a decision formalized on 18 September 2026. Club leadership sought a stay of proceedings during a hearing before Monaco's commercial court on Friday, arguing that an emergency appeal was pending before the Paris administrative court. The Monegasque court rejected the postponement, while the Paris administrative court is scheduled to rule on the federation's refusal before the end of October.

Transfer of basketball operations to the amateur tier
Following the court's confirmation of insolvency, AS Monaco Basket released a public message to supporters on 7 October announcing a complete halt to its activities. The organization stated that the professional project is pausing in the hope of finding a restructuring path in the future. The management formally handed over the future of men's basketball in the Principality to Association ASM. That amateur association operates youth development programs and fields a senior team in Nationale 3, the fifth division of French basketball. The club's statement praised the support of the fan base at Salle Gaston Médecin and expressed hope that the red-and-white colors will eventually return to the top tier.
The club communicated its operational suspension in a statement to supporters.
The club will now take a break, in the hope of finding a path toward restructuring and, one day, relaunching the project.
Sporting record across twelve years
The bankruptcy suspends an era in which AS Monaco Basket established itself as a dominant force in French basketball. Over a twelve-year span, the team won three French league championships in 2023, 2024, and 2026, alongside French Cup victories in 2023 and 2026. The club also secured four Leaders Cup trophies and the 2025 French Super Cup, concluding its final domestic campaign with a sweep of all four French trophies. On the continental level, Monaco won the EuroCup in 2021, earning the Principality its first European trophy in a team sport. During five seasons in the EuroLeague, the team reached the Final Four twice, finishing as continental runners-up in 2025.
