Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan swims 6.5 km across Bosphorus with son

Crossing the strait

On Sunday, 23 August 2026, Prime Minister of Moldova Vasile Tofan and his 14-year-old son Aron completed the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race in Istanbul. The 6.5-kilometer open-water course stretched from Kanlıca on the Asian shore to Kuruçeşme on the European side. Turkish authorities closed the Bosphorus Strait to commercial maritime traffic during the competition. Aron completed the swim in 1 hour and 13 minutes, finishing ahead of his father, who registered a time of 1 hour and 42 minutes.

Tofan reflected on his son's performance in a statement published after the event.

My son was faster than me, and few things bring more joy to a parent than seeing their child surpass them.

Fulfilling a personal commitment

Tofan explained that he made a commitment to his son in January 2026 that they would swim the strait together. Aron spent nearly a year training specifically for the 6.5-kilometer distance. At the time the agreement was made, Tofan did not anticipate holding national office. He was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova on 11 July 2026, nominated by the Action and Solidarity Party.

Speaking before the competition, Tofan described balancing his family obligation with his public duties as head of government.

He just turned 14 and I had to keep my promise. The problem is that I did not know that, in the meantime, I would become Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, so now I must keep my promise and, at the same time, make sure I get a good result so as not to bring shame to my country.

European symbolism and bilateral ties

Tofan framed the trajectory of the swim, moving from the Asian side to the European side, as aligned with Moldova's foreign policy goals of European integration. The prime minister also referenced cultural connections between Moldova and Turkey through the Gagauz minority, a Turkic-speaking community in Moldova, characterizing them as a cultural bridge connecting the two nations. During his stay in Turkey, Tofan conducted meetings with Turkish business executives. Moldovan government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici confirmed that the prime minister, his family, and his accompanying staff funded all transportation, accommodation, and registration costs from private financial resources.

Scale of the Bosphorus competition

The 2026 event marked the 38th edition of the annual race organized by the National Olympic Committee of Turkey. The inaugural competition took place in 1989 with 68 registered swimmers. For the 2026 race, the event drew 2,500 participants representing 78 different countries.

The swim marked Tofan's fourth career participation in the Istanbul race. He noted that navigating the maritime currents was the primary factor in completing the distance, explaining that spatial orientation in the water played a greater role than pure swimming technique. Following the conclusion of the race, Tofan confirmed that he and his son were returning to Chișinău to resume administrative and governmental duties.
