Mireille Mathieu turns 80: the 'Sparrow of Avignon' still has stage fright after 3,000 concerts

A voice that spans six decades

Mireille Mathieu, the French chanson singer with the signature black pageboy haircut and red lips, turns 80 on 22 July 2026. Her career, which began in December 1965 at the Paris Olympia, has produced more than 1,200 songs recorded in twelve languages and over 3,000 concerts worldwide. Fans from Germany, Scandinavia, Canada, Brazil, Mexico and many other countries travelled to her anniversary concert at the Olympia in October 2025. For Mathieu, a concert remains an encounter, not a routine.

From factory floor to Olympia

Born on 22 July 1946 in Avignon as the eldest of 14 children, Mathieu grew up in modest circumstances. Her father, a stonemason, loved opera and passed on his passion for music. She sang in church and at local festivals, but struggled at school and left early to work in a factory. She later described dreaming of a singing career while using a broom as a microphone in front of the mirror. In 1964, she won a talent contest in Avignon with a song by Edith Piaf, the great French chanteuse. Overnight, the young factory worker became a star. Mathieu still regards Piaf as an artistic mother figure, and her own mother as the most important person in her life.

Germany's adopted sparrow

Mathieu's connection to Germany is especially close. There she earned the nickname "Sparrow of Avignon," a reference to her hometown in Provence and her petite frame paired with an extraordinary voice. Her first notable German hits included "Hinter den Kulissen von Paris" and "Akropolis Adieu." In 1984, she received the Bundesverdienstkreuz, Germany's Order of Merit, for her contribution to Franco-German friendship. She has fond memories of encounters with artists such as Peter Alexander and, later, Florian Silbereisen. Even after six decades on stage, this chapter is not closed: Mathieu plans to return to Germany for concerts in autumn 2026.

The nervous artist

Despite her vast experience, Mathieu admits she still suffers from stage fright. Before her anniversary concert at the Olympia in October 2025, she struggled with nerves for an entire week. She describes herself as curious, disciplined, and sensitive. That vulnerability, she suggests, is part of what keeps her performances alive.
