Husband of Italian family minister missing in Lake Vico after boat jump; search hampered by near-zero visibility
Luigi Cavallari, 84, disappeared on Saturday after jumping from a boat into Lake Vico north of Rome. His wife, Family Minister Eugenia Roccella, was on board and raised the alarm.
The incident
On Saturday afternoon, Luigi Cavallari, 84, was on a small boat with his wife, Italian Family Minister Eugenia Roccella, on Lake Vico north of Rome. Around 4:30 p.m., he jumped into the water for a swim. He resurfaced briefly and told his wife he felt unwell, but the boat drifted away and he could not be reached. He then disappeared beneath the surface. The minister raised the alarm, and a large-scale search began.
Search operations
Firefighters, carabinieri, the Guardia di Finanza, and state police have been searching the lake without pause. Specialized divers from Rome, Naples, and Florence joined the effort, along with remotely operated underwater vehicles equipped with cameras and sonar. On Monday, a state-of-the-art underwater drone from Milan was deployed to scan the deepest areas. Simulations were conducted to model how currents and wind might have moved the body.
It is a particularly difficult search due to the conditions. Visibility is very poor just below the surface, and decreases further with depth, approaching zero.
- Cavallari jumps from boat, complains of feeling unwell, disappears
- Minister Roccella raises alarm, search begins
- Specialized divers from Naples and Florence arrive, current simulations conducted
- Underwater drone from Milan deployed, search continues with near-zero visibility
A dangerous lake
Lake Vico is a volcanic lake known for its cold water, muddy bottom, algae, and strong currents. The water temperature can be up to 15 degrees Celsius colder than the air, creating a risk of thermal shock. Local residents say the lake has claimed at least six lives in the past 15 years. A volunteer with the civil protection described the difficulty of recovering bodies: "In a lake like this, with water so cold, you don't jump in, and finding bodies is almost impossible unless they float up on their own."
Thermal shock hypothesis
The air temperature on Saturday was around 35°C, and the lake water much colder. The sudden temperature difference may have caused a thermal shock, leading to a sharp rise in blood pressure, cramps, or dizziness. This could explain why Cavallari, an experienced swimmer familiar with the lake, was unable to stay afloat. The hypothesis is being considered by rescuers.
The minister and her husband
Eugenia Roccella, the minister for family, birth rate, and equal opportunities, was on the boat with her husband of 50 years. The couple had a villa less than a kilometre from the shore in the Fiorò area. The mayor of Ronciglione, Mario Mengoni, expressed solidarity, saying the community was at the minister's disposal. The search remains concentrated on the area where Cavallari was last seen.
