Italian officer dies in Milan chase; driver arrested for vehicular homicide
A 39-year-old local police officer, Francesco Imprezzabile, died on Monday night after losing control of his motorcycle while pursuing an SUV that refused to stop at a checkpoint in Milan's southeastern outskirts.
The pursuit began around 21:30 in via Vittorini, Ponte Lambro, when a SUV moving suspiciously ignored a stop order and accelerated to a high speed. Imprezzabile, riding a service motorcycle, gave chase with two other police bikes and a state police car. Near via Milano in Peschiera Borromeo, colleagues lost sight of him and later found his motorcycle on the ground and Imprezzabile in cardiac arrest further ahead. He was airlifted to Niguarda hospital where he died from his injuries. The SUV was later found abandoned in Pioltello, a Milan suburb. The 27-year-old Albanian driver and a second person were tracked down and arrested in Monza e Brianza province the same night. Prosecutor Francesca Crupi has excluded a deliberate ramming at this stage, based on early evidence and camera footage. The driver, identified as B.G., was already under mandatory signature for another crime and has been taken to San Vittore prison on charges of vehicular homicide. President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni both expressed condolences, paying tribute to the officer's sacrifice.
