Milan metro lines M1, M2 and M3 shut as Atm public transport strike begins
Metro lines M1, M2 and M3 closed at 8:45 on Friday 9 October, while M4 and M5 stayed open. Surface vehicles kept running, though waiting times could be longer.
Strike hours and closures
The strike is affecting Atm's public transport network in Milan on Friday 9 October. According to Atm, the Azienda trasporti milanesi, from 9:00 the M4 and M5 metro lines remain open while M1, M2 and M3 are closed. Surface vehicles are still circulating, but waiting times may be longer. Fanpage reported that the three lines closed at 8:45, when trains that had left the terminus at that hour ended their service.
Unions and stated motives
The stoppage was called by the unions Al Cobas and Confial Trasporti. Their stated reasons include opposition to the liberalisation, privatisation and financialisation of the company, as well as to the tenders for services currently run by the Atm Group. Fanpage said no particular disruption had been reported for commuters so far.
Timeline and what comes next
The stoppage runs from 8:45 to 15:00, and then from 18:00 until the end of service. Fanpage noted that it was not certain the same lines would be affected in the evening, and that all metro lines could be disrupted from 18:00. Trenord regional and suburban trains are not affected, because the company said it had not joined the strike.
