Franco Baresi dies at 66: Milan and Italy legend farewelled by football world

A career defined by one club

Franco Baresi, one of the greatest defenders in football history, has died at the age of 66. The former AC Milan captain passed away at the Humanitas hospital in Rozzano, near Milan, on the morning of 31 July 2026, at 7:31 am, after a long illness. About a year earlier, he had undergone surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule. His condition appeared to improve, but in the weeks before his death, it worsened rapidly.

The final lap at San Siro

On 6 February 2026, at the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Baresi carried the Olympic torch into San Siro alongside lifelong friend and Inter rival Giuseppe Bergomi. Bergomi later told Sky that Baresi, already ill, had whispered to him before they entered the stadium: "Beppe, if you see me in difficulty, give me a hand. Don't worry, we've been through so much together. We'll get through this one too."

Bergomi described the moment as perhaps the first time he had guided Baresi, rather than the other way around. "Usually he was the one who guided us all. With few words, he led us. He had incredible charisma and personality."

Six Scudetti and three European Cups

Baresi spent his entire 20-year playing career with AC Milan, making him a rare symbol of loyalty in modern football. The club released a statement calling him "a heartbeat of our soul." Owner Gerry Cardinale said Baresi "embodied the values, character and excellence that define this club. Even in the last year, while facing his greatest challenge, he was always at Milan's side, silently reminding us what it means to represent these colours."

The Serie A league office called him "one of the greatest central defenders in the history of world football." With Milan, Baresi won six Italian league titles, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, two European Super Cups and four Italian Super Cups. He was a cornerstone of Arrigo Sacchi's revolutionary team and later Fabio Capello's dominant side. Sacchi took out a full-page tribute in La Gazzetta dello Sport: "To my extraordinary Captain, the last heroic bastion on the pitch and the first, unmatched example for everyone."

National team glory and the 1994 near-miss

Baresi was part of the Italy squad that won the 1982 World Cup, and he captained the national team that reached the final of USA 1994, losing to Brazil on penalties. Roberto Baggio, his teammate that night, posted a photograph of the two of them after the final and wrote: "So much pain and so much sadness. Goodbye Captain."

The global response to his death has been vast. Marca's headline read: "Franco Baresi, eternal legend of Milan and Italian football, has died." L'Equipe led with "Baresi, the death of a pioneer." The Portuguese daily A Bola wrote: "The history of Milan in mourning: Franco Baresi has died." BBC Sport carried a long piece headlined simply: "Mourning for football legend Baresi."

Rivals and teammates pay tribute

Tributes poured in from across the sport. Former Inter striker Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who once needed 12 stitches after a collision with Baresi during a Milan derby, said: "He left an indelible mark on Milan and Italian football." Former teammate Kakà posted on Instagram calling Baresi "one of football's examples of loyalty, class and leadership. Thank you for everything, Captain 6."

A resurfaced video showed Diego Maradona holding Baresi's number 6 shirt after a title-deciding match in the 1980s. Maradona said in the clip: "This is from a truly great player. I think Franco Baresi is the ultimate as a defender. This is a memory I will carry for life." Napoli, the club Maradona led, also expressed its "deepest condolences for the passing of Franco Baresi, flag and legend of Milan and the entire Italian football landscape."

Milan's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, a declared Inter fan, said Baresi was "not just a flag of AC Milan, but a symbol of dedication and loyalty who made this city and Italy great in the world." Former Milan CEO Adriano Galliani called Baresi "a champion in life and in sport."
