Charity ship rescues 50 migrants off Libya as seven die during sea crossing
The NGO vessel Life Support rescued 50 survivors from Somalia and Egypt in international waters off Libya on Monday, recovering seven bodies while two people remain in critical condition.
Rescue in the Libyan search zone
On Monday morning, 17 August 2026, the humanitarian rescue vessel Life Support, operated by the Italian non-governmental organization EMERGENCY, rescued 50 migrants from an overcrowded two-deck wooden boat in international waters within the Libyan search and rescue zone. Crew members spotted two vessels via radar at 06:00 local time before verifying their positions with binoculars from the deck. As the Life Support approached, a Libyan patrol craft closed in on the wooden vessel. Jonathan Nanì La Terra, the head of mission aboard Life Support, described the radio exchange during the approach:
At a distance of one mile, we contacted them to inform them that the rescue operation was already underway: the Libyan vessel remained on the scene monitoring the operation throughout its entire duration.
Rescue workers commenced the boarding operation at 08:07 local time. Seven migrants died during the crossing, and the rescue team discovered nine people lying on the wooden boat's deck after other passengers had carried them up from the hold.
- Overcrowded wooden boat departs from the coastal town of Zuwara in western Libya.
- Life Support crew detects the wooden vessel and an approaching Libyan patrol craft.
- Rescue team starts boarding the vessel, retrieving 50 survivors and seven deceased migrants.
- Italian authorities designate the port of Bari as the safe disembarkation location.
Passenger profile and medical emergencies
The 50 survivors brought aboard Life Support comprised 45 men and five women. According to testimonies given to humanitarian personnel, the passengers originated from Somalia and Egypt. The group included 29 unaccompanied foreign minors, consisting of 26 boys and three girls. The passengers reported that they departed at dawn on 16 August 2026 from Zuwara, a coastal town in western Libya situated 60 kilometers from the Tunisian border.
Two survivors were found in critical condition due to asphyxiation, prompting the medical team on board the Life Support to request urgent medical evacuation from competent authorities. In a separate incident along the Libyan coast on the same day, Libyan coastal security personnel recovered three unidentified bodies of irregular migrants on a beach in the Tajoura region near the Awda Al-Hayat tourist resort, coordinating recovery efforts with the Emergency Medical Center and local police.
Safe port assigned in southern Italy
Following the rescue, EMERGENCY asked maritime authorities to designate a nearby Place of Safety to minimize additional transit time for the injured and distressed passengers. Italian authorities assigned the southern Italian port of Bari for disembarkation. The fatalities recorded on Monday add to at least 872 migrant deaths documented across the Mediterranean during 2026, an increase of 24% compared to more than 700 deaths recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.
Parallel rescues and arrival statistics
Other humanitarian operations unfolded across the central Mediterranean on Monday morning. The NGO vessel operated by SOS Méditerranée rescued 55 people, including eight women and nine children, from an inflatable boat in the Maltese search and rescue zone. The group, consisting primarily of Sudanese nationals who had been adrift for three days, was spotted following a distress alert from a Frontex surveillance aircraft.
