Microsoft refreshes Surface Pro and Laptop with Snapdragon X2 Plus chips from $1,149.99

New Snapdragon hardware architecture

Microsoft announced refreshed versions of its entry-level Surface lineup during Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on 23 September 2026. The new Surface Pro 12-inch tablet and Surface Laptop 13-inch both incorporate Qualcomm's six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, moving away from first-generation silicon. According to company metrics, the new processor provides up to 17% faster performance in Office workloads, up to 18% better power efficiency, and over 60% faster graphics rendering. The processor also features a Qualcomm Hexagon neural processing unit rated at 80 trillion operations per second, which Microsoft reports delivers up to 95% faster local artificial intelligence inferencing.

Display and device specifications

The Surface Pro 12-inch tablet features an LCD PixelSense screen with a resolution of 2196 x 1464, a pixel density of 220 pixels per inch, and a refresh rate reaching up to 90Hz. The Surface Laptop 13-inch comes equipped with a 1920 x 1280 touchscreen operating at a standard 60Hz refresh rate. Both screens reach a maximum brightness of 500 nits, which represents a 25% increase over the 400 nits found on the preceding generation. Physical connectivity across both models includes two USB-C 3.2 ports, while the laptop retains a USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Wireless standards on both machines include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, and Microsoft will offer a 5G cellular configuration for the 12-inch tablet.

Pricing and memory tiers

Microsoft eliminated the 8GB entry-level configuration across both product lines, setting 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM as the standard base specification alongside an optional 24GB upgrade. Storage options for both machines range between 256GB and 512GB. The Surface Pro 12-inch carries a starting price of $1,149.99, rising from the $799.99 base price of the prior model. The Surface Laptop 13-inch begins at $1,199, up from the $899.99 starting price of its predecessor. Both devices will be sold to consumer and commercial customers in black, platinum silver, and violet finishes. Battery performance reaches an estimated 13 hours of web browsing on the Surface Pro, while the Surface Laptop delivers between 18 hours of web use and 22.5 hours of local video playback.

Surface Mouse and software accessories

Alongside the computers, Microsoft introduced the second-generation Surface Mouse for $79.99 in black and platinum finishes. The accessory integrates tactile haptic feedback for interface actions such as window snapping, dragging, and app controls across Windows 11, PowerPoint, and creative tools. It also features a customizable action button mapped to Copilot and connects to three devices simultaneously via Bluetooth 6.0. Brett Ostrum, Corporate Vice President of Surface Devices, explained the functional intent behind the updated peripheral.

Its haptic feedback adds a small, purposeful physical response to the moment you usually only see on a screen: a click registering, a window snapping into place or an object aligning just right.

Microsoft will also launch an Ink Canvas application tailored for handwritten notes and stylus-driven sketching with the separately sold Slim Pen. All three hardware products arrive in retail channels on 13 October 2026.
