The deal

Meta has bought Conductor, a startup founded in 2024 that builds an AI coding platform for running several coding agents at the same time. Axios first reported the deal in an exclusive published on 4 November, and Meta confirmed the purchase without giving further details. Neither company has disclosed what Meta paid.

Conductor's founder and chief executive, Charlie Holtz, announced the move in a post on X. Co-founder Jackson de Campos is the company's chief technology officer, according to Axios.

“I have big news: Conductor is joining Meta.”

What Conductor offers

The platform helps engineers divide a software project into separate parts and assign each part to an agent working in its own workspace. Those agents can run in the cloud, on a local machine or through a phone. Conductor does not build the agents itself; it relies on models from labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI. The core product reached the market in the summer.

Timeline for users

Holtz told users that the core features will keep working as they do now until early next year. The exception is the cloud service, which shuts down on 20 November. After that date the company will start deleting the user data it holds in the cloud. Holtz also hinted at a new product for customers by early next year.

The wider race for developers

The deal landed on the same day OpenAI told Axios it plans to acquire Pierre Computer, a developer tools startup that manages AI-generated code. OpenAI had already announced plans in June to acquire Ona, which works on cloud coding environments and agent orchestration. Meta launched its own coding agent, Muse Code, in August, and has reported that its Muse agents have passed 10 million users. The company has also bought Moltbook, a viral agent platform. The Verge notes that xAI spent $60 billion on Cursor before this deal.

Holtz said he looks forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, who leads product at Meta Superintelligence Labs. Holtz described their group as having the highest talent density of any AI lab, and Meta declined to share more about the terms.

Why it matters

Axios reported that the acquisition will help Meta build its next generation of AI coding products, according to sources it spoke with. An independent researcher told Axios that excelling at coding and math helps firms improve their AI models, which is why the sector matters beyond revenue. The Verge framed the deal as Meta competing with Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex, and Axios framed it as a bet that developers will need help managing many agents at once.
