Messi donates €80,000 to Madrid wildfire reconstruction as Ayuso thanks him publicly

Lionel Messi has donated €80,000 ($92,200) to reconstruction efforts in Madrid's Sierra Oeste region following devastating wildfires that swept through the area last week. The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, confirmed the contribution on 4 August 2026 in a post on X, thanking the Inter Miami forward and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner for the gesture.

Scale of the disaster

The wildfire consumed an estimated 27,000 to 30,000 hectares across 17 municipalities west of the Spanish capital, making it the largest fire recorded in the region in recent decades. More than 55,000 residents were evacuated or confined, and 43 homes were destroyed with over 300 others severely damaged. The affected localities include Aldea del Fresno, Cadalso de los Vidrios, Cenicientos, Chapinería, Colmenar del Arroyo, El Escorial (specifically the Peralejo district), Fresnedillas de la Oliva, Navalagamella, Navas del Rey, Pelayos de la Presa, Robledo de Chavela, Rozas de Puerto Real, San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Santa María de la Alameda, Valdemaqueda, Villa del Prado, and Zarzalejo. More than 56,000 people reside in these municipalities.

Ayuso had warned in late July that the toll would climb. "That number will rise enormously, as we have never seen before," she said at the time. The fires were part of a broader heatwave-driven crisis across Spain and France that has destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares and displaced more than 300,000 people, according to the New York Times.

Regional government response

The Community of Madrid has launched a package of 43 measures to accelerate recovery, including €20 million from the Regional Investment Programme reserve fund for cleaning, repair, and reconstruction of damaged infrastructure. An additional €10 million is earmarked for extraordinary support for elderly residents. The package also includes a 100% tax bonus on donations up to €10,000 for fire-related repairs, applicable to transfers between individuals regardless of family relationship.

A dedicated online portal, developed in partnership with CaixaBank, has been set up to centralise donations from citizens and businesses. Contributions can be made via bank transfer, direct debit, card payment, or Bizum.

Messi's philanthropic record

Messi, 39, has a long history of charitable work. He founded the Leo Messi Foundation in 2007, which supports children and young people through health, education, and sport initiatives. He has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010, and his foundation contributed to the construction of a paediatric cancer centre in Barcelona. On 4 January 2025, sixteen days before leaving office, US President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, with the White House citing his support for healthcare and education programmes for children worldwide.

Messi spent the bulk of his career at Barcelona after moving to Spain at age 13, remaining in the country for 21 years before joining Paris Saint-Germain. He now plays for Inter Miami. Last month, he finished as runner-up with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, losing 1-0 to Spain after extra time, and was the tournament's second top-scorer with eight goals. He previously captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Later this year, he is set to receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports from the Spanish Royal Family, with the jury recognising his talent, career, and ongoing solidarity work for disadvantaged children.
