Cameron Menzies collapses on stage at World Matchplay, forfeits to Ross Smith; Van Veen wins 14-12 thriller

Medical emergency on stage

Cameron Menzies was leading Ross Smith 2-1 in the fourth leg of their second-round match at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool when he stepped away from the oche and signalled to the caller that he felt unwell. The 34-year-old Scot pointed to his ear and appeared to lose his balance. Smith and the referee helped him off the stage, where he was treated behind a black curtain.

Cameron experienced high blood pressure, which caused him to feel dizzy and subsequently faint.

The PDC later confirmed that Menzies was assessed by on-site medics and deemed well enough to return to his accommodation, but he was unable to resume the match. Smith was awarded a regulatory win and advanced to the quarter-finals.

Van Veen outlasts Nijman in 14-12 classic

The evening's second match saw Dutch third seed Gian van Veen defeat compatriot Wessel Nijman 14-12 in a contest that required extra legs after a 10-10 tie. Van Veen, who reached the World Championship final last winter, led 4-1 early but Nijman fought back to 5-5. The pair traded legs until Van Veen held his nerve in the closing stages.

I wasn't great, but Wessel was completely poor, sorry to say it.

Van Veen joined Dirk van Duijvenbode as the two Dutch quarter-finalists. Van Duijvenbode eliminated Michael van Gerwen earlier in the week.

Past controversy

The incident was not Menzies' first moment of high emotion on a big stage. At the last World Championship, he lost to Charlie Manby and smashed his own table in frustration, cutting his hand. He later apologised, saying he had "a lot on my mind" and that it "just became too much."
