Giorgia Meloni defends Ciociaria after Democratic Party councillor uses regional slur
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to a remark made by Pontedera councillor Floriano Della Bella, who used the term ciociara during a municipal assembly to criticize her parody of the song Bella ciao.
Council dispute in Pontedera
The political confrontation began on 30 September 2026 during a session of the municipal council in Pontedera, a town located in the province of Pisa. Floriano Della Bella, a local councillor representing the opposition Democratic Party, used his speaking time to condemn Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Della Bella took issue with Meloni's public performance at a Gioventù Nazionale party conference, where she sang a parody of the anti-fascist partisan song Bella ciao reworded as Bollo ciao. In his floor speech, Della Bella asserted that the parody disrespected Italian history and declared that Meloni was acting as a "ciociara, in the most derogatory manner." Marco Salvadori, the president of the Pontedera city council and a fellow member of the Democratic Party, immediately interrupted Della Bella to admonish him and demanded that he use language appropriate for his institutional office. Della Bella subsequently argued that the expression was an unintentional slip of the tongue, explaining that he had actually intended to say "caciarona," a Roman dialect word used to describe a boisterous or loud woman.

Response from the Prime Minister
On the morning of 8 October 2026, Meloni issued a detailed statement across her social media accounts to address the councillor's remarks. Meloni opened her response by listing numerous personal epithets previously directed at her, mentioning insults aimed at her physical appearance, background, and family. She argued that the council member's phrasing crossed a boundary by using a regional population descriptor as an institutional insult against nearly half a million citizens. Meloni firmly rejected the notion that origins linked to the Ciociaria territory in southeastern Lazio were a source of disgrace, expressing personal pride in being associated with the area.
And I am proud to be called a Ciociara. Because Ciociaria is one of the most beautiful, ancient, and extraordinary regions of our Italy.
To illustrate the cultural heritage of the area, Meloni listed prominent historical figures connected to the land. Her statement cited ancient Roman orator Cicero and military general Gaius Marius, medieval Pope Boniface VIII, Catholic philosopher Saint Thomas Aquinas, and cinematic artists including Vittorio De Sica, Marcello Mastroianni, and Nino Manfredi.
Wider political reactions
The remarks from the local council chamber prompted swift reactions across the national political landscape. Representatives of the governing Fratelli d'Italia party organized behind the prime minister, turning the municipal dispute into a broader national controversy. Nicola Procaccini, a Fratelli d'Italia member of the European Parliament and co-chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists group, issued a statement denouncing the remarks as evidence of snobbery toward ordinary provincial citizens.
For the PD, defining someone as 'ciociaro' is an insult, for me no piece of our splendid nation can be defined in a derogatory way.
Procaccini called on the national secretariat of the Democratic Party and wider opposition figures to issue formal condemnations of the Pontedera councillor's words. While Meloni's family ancestry traces to Sardinia and Rome rather than Ciociaria itself, political figures including Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani maintain close electoral and personal ties to the district. On the afternoon of 8 October 2026, Meloni continued her scheduled official appointments by traveling to Ascoli Piceno to attend the inauguration of renovation works at Palazzo Saladini Pilastri.
