A 45-year-old man has appeared in an Australian court charged with murder after 39-year-old Irish mother Annmarie O'Reilly was found dead with serious injuries in a Ferntree Gully home on Friday.
Emergency response in Ferntree Gully
Emergency services were called to a residential address on Ferntree Gully Road in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne just before 10:00 on Friday, 21 August, which was approximately 1:00 Irish time. The property, situated in the suburb of Ferntree Gully roughly 30 kilometres from Melbourne's Central Business District, was identified as the home of a young family. Police officers and paramedics arrived to find a woman suffering from serious injuries inside the home. Paramedics carried out emergency resuscitation efforts in an attempt to save her life, but she was declared dead at the scene. Victoria Police immediately sealed off the residence and established an active crime scene under the direction of the Homicide Squad.
Arrest and victim identification
Shortly after arriving at the property, detectives arrested a 45-year-old Ferntree Gully man in the immediate vicinity of the house. Witnesses in the neighbourhood reported observing the suspect being taken into police custody while wearing a protective hazmat suit. The arrested man is believed to be an Irish national originally from County Waterford. Authorities subsequently identified the deceased woman as 39-year-old Annmarie O'Reilly, a mother of three who was originally from Clonmel in County Tipperary, Ireland. Victoria Police statements contained differing records regarding her age, with an initial police statement stating the victim was 30 years old before subsequent reports confirmed her age as 39.

Forensic investigation and murder charge
Detectives from the Victoria Police Homicide Squad attended the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Forensic specialists spent much of Friday gathering physical evidence across the property, with forensic work continuing into Friday evening. Local municipal authorities also removed a pet dog from the residential property as police secured the area. Investigators confirmed that the victim and the accused were known to each other, though police have not publicly disclosed the specific nature of the fatal injuries or their exact relationship. Australian national news outlet 9News initially reported that the man remained uncharged in custody, but he has since appeared before a court on one charge of murder.
Consular assistance and family tributes
The Irish government formally acknowledged the suspicious death in Australia through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, confirming that diplomatic officials are providing support to the family.
It is aware of this case and is providing consular assistance. As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.
In Ireland, family members and relatives shared tributes following the public confirmation of her death. Her cousin John O'Reilly published an emotional message on social media expressing grief for her children and parents.
What a cruel world we live in. Rest in peace to my cousin Annmarie. God look over your children at this sad time and help my uncle and wife get through this sad time. May you get the best bed in heaven.
