Scott McTominay cleared for Napoli return after undergoing heart procedure
Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has received medical clearance to resume full training following a surgical ablation procedure in September to correct a benign heart arrhythmia.
Medical clearance and return to training
Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has received official medical clearance to resume full competitive sporting activity following a surgical ablation procedure. The 29-year-old Scotland international underwent tests on 7 October 2026 that confirmed his recovery from a mild, benign cardiac arrhythmia, allowing him to rejoin group training under manager Massimiliano Allegri. The corrective procedure took place on 8 September 2026 at Spire Manchester Hospital in England, where club medical staff described the intervention as a complete success.
McTominay had previously carried out individual conditioning drills and non-contact exercises at the club's training ground while awaiting test results. Napoli confirmed the development through an official statement on Wednesday afternoon.
Scott McTominay underwent further diagnostic tests, which showed that he is fit to play. The Napoli player therefore resumed training with the rest of the team after the period spent training separately.
- Substituted in the 56th minute against Como before starting personalized training
- Undergoes heart ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital
- Receives competitive clearance and resumes full squad training
Absence during early season fixtures
The midfielder had been sidelined from competitive play since 30 August 2026, when he was substituted in the 56th minute during Napoli's 2-1 defeat against Como. Following that fixture, McTominay took to social media to reassure supporters about his upcoming treatment and subsequent recovery.
See you soon Napoli, I won't take long.
During his five-week layoff, McTominay missed three club fixtures across all competitions. Napoli recorded a 3-2 defeat against champions Inter Milan in Serie A and opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-0 home defeat against Premier League champions Arsenal. The medical intervention also ruled the midfielder out of Scotland's international roster for UEFA Nations League matches against Slovenia, Switzerland, and North Macedonia.
Napoli squad selection and upcoming schedule
Napoli enter the upcoming weekend ranked ninth in the Serie A standings, having collected two wins, one draw, and two defeats from their opening five league fixtures. Allegri faces several squad selection constraints, with players including Mathias Olivera, Antonio Vergara, and Pasquale Favasuli dealing with injuries. Napoli host sixth-placed Frosinone, managed by Massimiliano Alvini, on Saturday at 20:45.
While McTominay is back in team training, medical staff and the coaching staff plan to assess his match conditioning before deciding whether to deploy him against Frosinone. Napoli face a congested schedule after the league resumption, including an away trip against Villarreal in the Champions League and a Serie A match against Venezia on 17 October 2026.
Midfield record in Naples
McTominay joined Napoli in 2024 from Manchester United for a transfer fee in the region of €30 million (approximately £25.4 million or $33.6 million). In his debut season in Italian football, he helped the club secure the Serie A championship and earned the league's Most Valuable Player award.
