Greek authorities widen Mazonakis death probe to second Kolonaki site and financial records
Greek investigators have expanded their inquiry into the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis to a second Kolonaki location, while examining the finances of two detained doctors and reviewing emergency response records.

Greek judicial and law enforcement authorities have widened their investigation into the death of popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis, shifting focus beyond the clinic on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki. Investigators are examining a second premises on Patriarchou Ioakeim Street in the same Athens district. The site was allegedly used without required permits for medical procedures, hypnotherapy sessions, and seminars. In parallel, the head of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority, deputy prosecutor Charalambos Vourliotis, ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the bank accounts, fees, and assets of the two remanded doctors to establish whether illicit financial activities occurred.
A key associate of the detained female doctor, a hypnotherapist, is scheduled to testify before the investigating magistrate on Monday. The female doctor sent him a photograph of Mazonakis while the singer was lying on the plasmapheresis bed. Mazonakis had scheduled an appointment with the hypnotherapist in Kifisia following the procedure, but the meeting never occurred. Investigators seek to clarify why the image was transmitted, what communications took place during those critical moments, and what the hypnotherapist knew about the singer's physical condition.
Defense strategy and clinic timeline
Inside the Karneadou Street practice, where the singer suffered cardiac arrest during a plasmapheresis session, the 58-year-old male doctor has altered his legal defense. Through his attorney, he submitted a release petition solely for himself, seeking complete legal separation from his wife and co-defendant. He contends that he bore no operational responsibility for Mazonakis's procedure and that, if culpability is established, the charge should be reduced to fatal exposure rather than intentional homicide with contingent malice.
The male doctor maintains that he was occupied in a separate office examining another patient and was not alerted by his wife until shortly before 4:00 PM, leaving him insufficient time to intervene. A 67-year-old patient confirmed being in the doctor's office for a scheduled diagnostic appointment from 15:30. Electronic records verify that a medical referral was transmitted to the patient's mobile telephone at 16:06.

Emergency response and past medical allegations
Records from the National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) indicate friction between arriving paramedics and clinic staff during the transfer of Mazonakis to Elpis Hospital. The official transfer document recorded that the singer was not breathing, that CPR had been initiated, and that adrenaline had been administered. It also noted that the physicians on site declined to provide critical information about the patient's medical history or the intervention underway.
The doctors present at the scene refused to provide information about the patient.
EKAB workers union president Giorgos Mathiopoulos stated that responders found the doctor administering chest compressions with a single hand while Mazonakis was not placed in a standard horizontal position. The investigation has also prompted retrospective complaints regarding the clinic's therapeutic practices. A mother reported visiting the clinic eight years ago seeking care for her two-year-old child with a neurological syndrome. She alleged that the female physician diagnosed stomach parasites through foot reflexology and recommended an unlicensed drinkable cannabis preparation costing approximately 300 euros, arranged through an informal courier.
Detention conditions at Korydallos prison
Both doctors remain in pre-trial detention at Korydallos prison in Athens following decisions by the investigating judge and prosecutor. Due to security concerns, the two suspects are held in separate cells, placed under enhanced protective measures, and restricted to solitary yard time. The female doctor was transferred to the female wing into a cell previously occupied by inmate Eirini Mourtzoukou.
Tensions within the facility intensified because Mazonakis was widely admired among inmates, having staged a Valentine's Day concert in the women's wing on 14 February 2023. Detainees reportedly displayed a banner reading "Forever Mazo" following the doctor's arrival. Defense attorneys representing the two practitioners have announced plans to submit formal legal appeals against the detention warrants by Monday.
