A word for optimizing everything
Dictionary.com announced on Monday, 26 October, that "maxxing" is its Word of the Year for 2026. The site says the term can stand alone or be added to almost any word to mean doing something to the fullest or optimizing it as much as possible. Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for the Dictionary Media Group, framed the choice as a reflection of how deeply the word has spread online.
“Maxxing is the linguistic manifestation of a culture increasingly preoccupied with getting the most out of everything.”
Dictionary.com's analysis found that digital media used the word nearly 19 times more in August 2026 than its 2025 monthly average. A separate 1,000% rise in use across 2026 is attributed to the company's data, while Johnson put the rise on social media at nearly 700% across the first seven months of 2026. These measures differ, so they are best read as separate yardsticks rather than a single count.
From gaming tables to online forums
The word grew out of "min-maxing", a strategy in tabletop and role-playing games where players push one character trait at the expense of others. Linguists tracking the term have documented examples since 1990, when it appeared in a Dungeons and Dragons context. It gained wider currency in incel and manosphere circles during the 2010s, mainly through "looksmaxxing", the effort to become more attractive. Use of looksmaxxing rose more than 1,000%, appearing 12 times as often between January and September 2026 as in 2025.
Everyday uses multiply
The suffix now attaches to fitness, sleep, food, money and work. Influencers post about "proteinmaxxing" and "fibermaxxing", while AI enthusiasts describe "tokenmaxxing" at work to show how much the technology boosts their productivity. The Trump administration uses "homelandmaxxing" and "deportationmaxxing" to describe removing undocumented immigrants, and the Pentagon brags about "lethalitymaxxing". Johnson's own favourite is "nonnamaxxing", a way of living like an Italian grandmother by slowing down, cooking and building social connections.
Johnson described the drive behind the word in plain terms.
“Whatever we're doing, we want to push it further,”
The influencer Clavicular has gained thousands of followers by chronicling his extreme looksmaxxing, with particular focus on jawlines, eyes and physique.
Shortlist and past winners
Dictionary.com also weighed affordability, data centre, odyssey and "unc" as possible winners, according to BBC. Affordability has been used consistently since the 2024 election but lacks maxxing's rate of growth. Data centers have entered everyday debate through fights over electricity use, environmental hazards and water use at town halls. Two years ago the site chose "demure", and last year's pick was "67".
