Sergio Mattarella conducts first state visit by an Italian president to Monaco
President Sergio Mattarella arrived at the Prince's Palace on Friday for a two-day state visit, marking the first time an Italian head of state has officially visited the Principality of Monaco.
Palace reception and bilateral discussions
President Sergio Mattarella arrived in the Principality of Monaco on Friday, 2 October 2026, marking the first official state visit by an Italian head of state to the sovereign city-state. Accompanied by his daughter Laura Mattarella, the Italian president was received in the Court of Honour of the Prince's Palace, the official residence of the Grimaldi family, by Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène. The formal arrival protocol included military honours, the performance of the Italian and Monegasque national anthems, and the presentation of both official delegations. Following the welcoming ceremonies in the courtyard, Mattarella and Prince Albert retired to the Family Salon for closed-door bilateral talks. Ahead of the two-day summit, Prince Albert expressed the significance of the meeting in an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera.
Welcoming President Mattarella to Monaco is something fantastic, he is the first Italian president on a state visit to the Principality and for us it is a great pride and together the testimony of the strength of the historical ties between our two countries.
Official program and cultural engagements
The initial day of the visit concluded with cultural and diplomatic functions organized at sovereign venues. Mattarella and his daughter Laura joined Prince Albert and Princess Charlène at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo to attend a lyrical opera performance by Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. Following the musical presentation, the Monegasque royal hosts held an official luncheon in honour of the Italian delegation in the Throne Room of the Prince's Palace. The official itinerary continues on the morning of Saturday, 3 October, when Mattarella meets with staff from the Embassy of Italy and a delegation representing the Italian community residing in Monaco. Prince Albert and Mattarella will then conduct a joint visit to the Oceanographic Museum, an international scientific institution dedicated to marine research, before the president returns to Rome.

Historical ties and shared institutional values
The state visit reflects longstanding genealogical and diplomatic connections that span more than seven centuries. Formal diplomatic relations between Italy and Monaco date back to 1875, while the foundation of Monaco began in 1297 when Francesco Grimaldi departed from the Italian port city of Genoa. Demographic links remain substantial in the modern era, with over 60% of Monegasque citizens tracing their family roots to Italy. Prince Albert noted that both governments cooperate closely within international bodies, sharing foundational commitments to international law, global peace, and environmental preservation. The sovereign affirmed that Monaco has consistently supported the candidacies of Italian experts for positions across multilateral institutions.

Commercial cooperation and cross-border infrastructure
Economic relations between the two neighboring states encompass broad investments in fashion, luxury retail, financial services, yachting, and architecture. Prince Albert pointed to specific joint initiatives, including Italian architect Renzo Piano's contributions to Monaco's MareTerra urban development district. Cross-border infrastructure projects also include the Cala del Forte marina in the Italian border town of Ventimiglia, which Prince Albert inaugurated in 2021. The two leaders previously conferred in Rome in June and in Milan during events surrounding the Milano Cortina Games. The Monaco visit is designed to further consolidate mutual cooperation in sustainability, trade, sports, and cultural exchange.
