Mati remembers 104 victims of 2018 wildfire on eighth anniversary

Memorial events culminated today in Mati, Greece, marking eight years since the wildfire that killed 104 people and left dozens injured. Relatives, burn survivors, residents, and politicians walked to Argyra Akti, where memorial prayers were held. The Association of Relatives of the Dead and Burn Victims, in cooperation with the Marathon municipality, organized the commemorations, which included a vigil last night at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Neos Voutzas and at the memorial to the dead. Today's events concluded at the Nautical Athletic Club in Mati, where a trisagion was performed and mourners released lanterns into the water, at the spot where hundreds sought refuge and many lost their lives that night.
Eight years later, memory is not only an act of honor, but also a constant reminder of the value of every life that cannot be undermined, and institutions, the State, and society cannot overlook.
