Wall collapse from under-construction building in Marousi injures man sitting in his yard
A partition wall from a building under construction on Georgiou Papandreou Street collapsed on Sunday afternoon, sending debris into the adjacent yard and injuring the homeowner.
The collapse
A partition wall of a building under construction at 8 Georgiou Papandreou Street in Marousi, a northern suburb of Athens, collapsed shortly after 19:00 on Sunday, 4 July 2026. The wall, made of bricks and plaster, fell onto the roof and yard of the neighboring single-family house. The owner was sitting in his yard at the time and was struck by falling debris.
Injury and response
The man sustained light injuries to his legs. An ambulance arrived at the scene and transported him to the G. Gennimatas General State Hospital of Athens for first aid. His condition is not reported as serious. A neighbor described the moment: the whole house shook and a large piece of wall fell on the man. She added that the construction site had been abandoned for years, with no ongoing works.
Traffic disruption
Police forces cordoned off the area immediately after the incident. Vehicle traffic on Georgiou Papandreou Street was halted from the junction with Sapphous Street. The closure remained in place while authorities removed hazardous materials and conducted safety checks.
Investigation and context
Authorities are investigating the causes of the collapse. The incident comes days after a similar wall collapse in the Petralona district of Athens, though no link between the two events has been established.
