Greek Football Mourns the Sudden Death of Former International Defender Marios Oikonomou at 33
The Greek football world is in mourning following the death of former international defender Marios Oikonomou, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious motorcycle accident in Ioannina nine days ago.
A Life Cut Short on the Road
The Greek football community has been plunged into mourning by the death of Marios Oikonomou at the age of 33. The former international defender passed away in the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Ioannina, where he had been hospitalized following a serious traffic accident. According to reports, his motorcycle collided with a vehicle making a U-turn on a central road in Ioannina, near the "Hatzikosta" hospital. He was immediately transported to the hospital, intubated, and transferred to the ICU, where he fought for his life for several days before succumbing to his injuries.
We mourn again, together with all of football, together with all of sports-loving Greece. We mourn for Marios, for those he leaves behind, for yet another life lost on the asphalt.
A Career Across Europe
Oikonomou's football journey began in the youth academies of PAS Giannina, the club from his hometown. He broke into the first team and made his mark in the Super League between 2011 and 2013, where his talent as a ball-playing central defender quickly became apparent. His performances earned him a move to AEK Athens, for whom he made 64 appearances across two seasons. His career then took him abroad, where he played for several clubs in Italy's Serie A, including Cagliari, Bologna, SPAL, Bari, and Sampdoria. From 2020 to 2022, he played in Denmark for FC Copenhagen. He concluded his playing career in Greece with Panetolikos, retiring two seasons ago.
Tributes from the Football Establishment
The Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) issued a statement expressing deep sorrow, with president Makis Gkagkatsis and the Executive Committee extending their sincere condolences. The statement highlighted that Oikonomou "stood out throughout his football career not only for his presence on the pitch, but also for his ethos, professionalism, and his smile." The Super League also released a message, stating the entire league community was expressing deep sadness. Oikonomou earned six caps for the Greek national team during his career.
The deceased stood out throughout his football career not only for his presence on the pitch, but also for his ethos, professionalism, and his smile, qualities that earned him the esteem and respect of teammates, coaches, and fans.
AEK and Political Figures React
AEK Athens, where Oikonomou spent two seasons, released a heartfelt message from owner Marios Iliopoulos. The club announced the postponement of a symbolic celebration that had been scheduled for the evening of June 1 at the "Agia Sophia" stadium in Nea Filadelfeia, out of respect for the deceased. The club's amateur section posted a brief but poignant message simply stating, "There are no words..." The SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Greece's main opposition party, also issued a statement honoring Oikonomou's contribution to Greek sport, praising the ethos and fighting spirit he demonstrated throughout his career.
With sadness of heart and soul, we learned a short while ago of the sad fact that Marios Oikonomou lost his battle for life. Difficult moments for which words cannot convey for AEK, but much more so for his family, the extent of his loss.
A Legacy of Ethos and Fighting Spirit
Across all tributes, a consistent theme emerges: Oikonomou was remembered not just for his abilities as a defender, but for his character. The Panhellenic Association of Professional Footballers (PSAPP) bid him farewell as a "fighter," vowing he would always be remembered that way. Panetolikos, his final club, described him as a young man who left his own mark with his ethos and quality. His boyhood club, PAS Giannina, mourned the loss of one of their own, a player who rose from their academies to compete at the highest levels in Greece and Europe.
