Roger Federer inducted into International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport

Induction ceremony in Newport

Roger Federer entered the International Tennis Hall of Fame on 29 August 2026 during an induction ceremony held in Newport, Rhode Island. The 45-year-old Swiss player joined the institution as its 271st member since its establishment in 1955. American television broadcaster and former professional player Mary Carillo was inducted alongside him. More than 1,000 spectators and several former champions, including Billie Jean King and John McEnroe, gathered on the grounds to attend the presentation.

Federer described the enshrinement as one of the greatest honours of his life, noting that public recognition was never his primary motivation during his playing days.

They call this the Hall of Fame, but fame was never the goal. My goal was to spend my life doing something I love, with people who love it as much as I do.

Family tributes and personal reflection

Miroslava "Mirka" Federer, who met her future husband at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney when both represented Switzerland, delivered the introductory laudatio. In an eight-minute address, she thanked him for prioritizing their family throughout two decades on the professional circuit. The couple's four children, twin daughters Myla Rose and Charlene Riva and twin sons Leo and Lenny, watched from the audience alongside Federer's parents, Robert and Lynette Federer.

Watching you during your career and accompanying you was an absolute privilege and gave me the greatest joy. Sharing life with you is an even greater privilege.

Federer praised his wife for managing his professional and personal affairs throughout his career, joking about her rare public speaking appearance before thanking his family and medical teams.

Records and career milestones

Federer retired from the ATP Tour in autumn 2022 following persistent knee complications. His 24-year professional career began in 1998, the same year he achieved the junior world number one ranking. He captured 20 Grand Slam singles championships: eight at Wimbledon, six at the Australian Open, five consecutive titles at the US Open between 2004 and 2008, and one at Roland Garros in 2009. His Grand Slam haul places him third in men's singles history behind Novak Djokovic (24) and Rafael Nadal (22).

Federer accumulated 103 ATP Tour singles titles and spent 310 weeks ranked world number one. Representing Switzerland, he won an Olympic doubles gold medal with Stan Wawrinka in Beijing in 2008, Olympic singles silver in London in 2012, and the 2014 Davis Cup.

Playing style and generational legacy

Reflecting on his progression from a 13-year-old ball boy in Basel to elite competition, Federer described his technical evolution, including serve-and-volley tactics, aggressive baseline positioning, and the sneak attack on return (SABR). He humorously cited equipment statistics from over 4,000 career sets, mentioning that he wore more than 5,000 headbands and over 7,000 pairs of socks by doubling them up for matches. Federer acknowledged competing across multiple player eras, citing early encounters with Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Lleyton Hewitt alongside rivalries with Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.
