Flash floods devastate Eastern Mani on Assumption Day, 10 rescued from vehicles

A sudden summer storm struck Eastern Mani on 15 August, flooding villages, sweeping cars into the sea, and prompting 50 emergency calls to the Fire Service.

Sudden storm hits Eastern Mani on Assumption Day

A powerful summer squall struck Eastern Mani on Saturday, 15 August 2026, the feast of the Assumption, turning village roads into torrents and flooding homes and tourist accommodations. The Fire Service Operations Centre received approximately 50 calls for assistance starting around 16:30, and rescue teams carried out 10 extrications of people trapped in vehicles, transferring them to safety. The storm hit on a day of heavy traffic due to the Dekapentaugousto holiday, one of the busiest travel days of the Greek summer, causing disruption for residents, business owners, and visitors across the region. The worst-affected areas, based on calls received by the Fire Service, included Oitylo, Neo Oitylo, Alypa, Kokkala, and Exo Nymphe, with Kokkala and Alypa reported to have suffered the greatest damage.

Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection Giorgos Exarchakos, speaking to ANA-MPA, said the communities of Nymphe, Exo Nymphe, Kokkala, and Lagia were hit, with significant damage reported to houses and especially the road network, where sections were completely destroyed.

It is a situation unprecedented for our area. Fortunately no people were endangered.

— Giorgos Exarchakos

Damage to infrastructure and property

In Kokkala, the torrential rain turned the village's main road into a rushing stream, with water descending toward the sea with great force and sweeping away everything in its path. Reports from the area indicated over 110 tons of water per stremma. Water levels rose significantly in some locations, reaching window height of buildings and entering the interiors of homes and tourist lodgings. In Alypa, approximately 20 meters of road surface was completely destroyed. Cars were swept into the sea, and significant damage was reported to both road surfaces and bridges.

She noted that several people requested removal from affected areas and were accommodated at the closed gymnasium in Areopoli. In Oitylo, the coastal road was closed and several cars were swept away. The settlement was described as turning into a massive waterfall, with large quantities of water rushing down and causing concern among residents. Similar scenes were recorded in Limeni.
