Mounting pressure on Arsenal and Slegers
The defeat leaves Arsenal in 10th place with five points from five matches, ten points adrift of league leaders Manchester City. The result marks the club's lowest points tally after five matches since 2014, with only two victories in seven fixtures across all competitions. Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers walked over to applaud the 2,000 travelling supporters following the final whistle.
I mostly went there to thank them, and connect with them, and show them that I care for them and appreciate them coming to Manchester. And also showing to show them that I feel - not sorry for them because I'm, of course, a big part of it and things are within my control - but they're coming here and they're not getting the rewards, just like the team. So I just wanted to connect with them instead of walking away and hiding.
Slegers confirmed that the club will conduct a full review covering matchday performance, training schedules, and player preparation during the international break.
London City Lionesses and Chelsea stay in pursuit
London City Lionesses moved into third place on 12 points following a 6-1 away win against Tottenham Hotspur. Eder Maestre's side recorded 47.6% of their shots on target compared to Tottenham's 11%, with summer signings Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani each scoring twice. Second-placed Chelsea remained two points behind Manchester City after defeating West Ham United 3-0. Melvine Malard gave Chelsea the lead before Keira Walsh and Maika Hamano added late goals. Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor praised Walsh's attacking influence from midfield.
It helps us a lot in terms of creating opportunities. We know how good she is when she is at the edge of the box... Right now it's good to have a player who is confident and brings us the solution to scoring goals.
