What happened

A man fell from a building at the junction of Peiraios and Geraniou streets in the Omonia area of central Athens on Monday, 19 October. Firefighters, police officers and an EKAB ambulance rushed to the scene, the area was cordoned off, and the man, unconscious, was taken to the Gennimatas hospital. Some outlets described the building as a hotel, while others did not specify the type of building. Early reports differed on whether he was alive, and later reports said he had died.

Conflicting early details

Early reports placed the fall at the second floor, while later reports, including those from NEWS 24/7 and NewsIT, put it at the fourth floor. Orange Press, cited by several outlets, reported sounds of commotion coming from the room and broken glass. The same reports said that seconds before the fall the man shouted 'help, help'. Early reports did not establish his identity, and the circumstances remained unclear in the first hours.

Police inquiry

Police said the first evidence points to suicide, but investigators are examining every possibility. They are trying to establish whether another person was near him at that moment and whether a threat or an altercation came before the fall. The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Omonia police station. The case remains open while these questions are checked.
