Manchester City beats Norwich 5-0 in League Cup as Floyd Samba scores twice on debut

A heavily rotated Manchester City side secured a place in the League Cup fourth round on Thursday with a 5-0 victory over Norwich City, setting up a clash with Brighton.

Debutants lead five-goal victory

Manchester City secured their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Thursday evening with a 5-0 win over Championship club Norwich City at the Etihad Stadium. With regular striker Erling Haaland rested after scoring City's previous five goals, 17-year-old academy forward Floyd Samba started in attack and produced two goals on his senior debut. Samba, the son of former Blackburn Rovers, Queens Park Rangers, and Aston Villa defender Christopher Samba, opened the scoring in the 29th minute. The teenager met a delivery from debutant Allan Elias with a glancing header after Norwich goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw failed to collect a cross. In the second half, Samba scored again in the 54th minute, curling a shot into the far corner after Rayan Ait-Nouri seized possession from Norwich's defence.

First-half control and clinical finishing

The home side established command midway through the first half after Norwich created early chances down the flank through Darlin Yongwa, Jacob Wright, and Papa Amadou Diallo. City threatened when Samba flicked a pass to release Rico Lewis, before doubling the lead in the 32nd minute. Samba held the ball up in his own half and released French midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who was making his first start at the Etihad following an £86 million (100 million euro) transfer from Lille. Bouaddi sent a through ball to Rayan Cherki, who finished clinically to Grimshaw's right. Brazilian winger Allan Elias, signed from Palmeiras for £34 million ($46 million), added a third in the 48th minute by cutting inside and finding the bottom corner. Substitute Ryan McAidoo, entering for Cherki at half-time, concluded the scoring at the 90th minute following an assist from Nico O'Reilly.

Heavy rotation and sixth straight win

The result maintained a 100% record in competitive fixtures for Enzo Maresca since taking over as Pep Guardiola's successor, excluding the season-opening Community Shield. Maresca made 10 changes to the starting line-up from Sunday's 1-0 derby win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Only Cherki retained his place in the starting eleven, with Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli also making his debut between the posts. City rested key players including Haaland, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Enzo Fernandez, while Phil Foden served a suspension following his red card in the Manchester derby. Norwich manager Philippe Clement also made nine alterations to his team to focus on the Championship, where the Canaries occupy 14th place in the table.

Brighton next in fourth round

Manchester City will host Brighton and Hove Albion in the fourth round of the tournament. Brighton advanced after defeating Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday. The round of 16 includes 13 clubs from the Premier League, two from League One in Peterborough United and Bradford City, and one from League Two in Fleetwood Town, who were drawn against Arsenal. The fourth-round fixtures will take place on 27, 28, and 29 October. City now prepare to host Regis Le Bris's Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday before entering an international break.
