Irish Police Charge Man in His 50s Over Dublin Traffic Assault on TD Michael Healy-Rae

Traffic attack on Cork Street

Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae was assaulted in south inner Dublin shortly after 4:00pm on Wednesday while driving home from Leinster House. The 59-year-old Kerry politician was stopped in rush-hour traffic on Cork Street near the Coombe hospital in his silver Skoda, which displayed his name and constituency contact details. Healy-Rae was speaking on a mobile phone call with his son, Kerry County Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae Jr, with his car window rolled down when a man approached from the roadway. The assailant shouted at the vehicle, reached through the open window, and struck Healy-Rae in the face and head before fleeing on foot.

Medical treatment and political reaction

Officers from Kevin Street Garda Station responded to the scene and brought the former junior minister into the station before paramedics arrived. Healy-Rae was transported to St Vincent's University Hospital, where doctors stitched facial lacerations and treated head trauma before discharging him just before 9:00pm on Wednesday night. After returning home to Kilgarvan in County Kerry to recuperate, Healy-Rae issued a statement thanking emergency services and rejecting political intimidation.

“Whatever the intention behind this attack, I will not be deterred from continuing my work or from representing the people of Kerry to the very best of my ability.”

His son Jackie recounted listening to the assault unfold live over the phone, telling Radio Kerry that a commotion turned to chaos before his father was blindsided. He warned that social media hostility is escalating danger for public figures. In Dáil Éireann, TD Danny Healy-Rae condemned the violence against elected representatives who cannot defend themselves in traffic. Prime Minister Micheál Martin, who experienced a separate attempted assault at the National Ploughing Championships earlier in the week, called the Dublin attack a significant moment for the country.

“Our democracy is relatively unusual in the sense that our members of parliament, and indeed ministers and myself, can walk through our streets unhindered.”

Suspect arrested and charged

Following the altercation, An Garda Síochána recovered closed-circuit television footage tracking a suspect walking a medium-sized brown dog. Assistant Garda Commissioner Jonathan Roberts described the person of interest as a man in his 50s wearing a flat cap, glasses, a grey coat over a two-tone top, and dark trousers while carrying a yellow carrier bag. Roberts urged the suspect to surrender and asked members of the public to provide recordings directly to police rather than posting footage on social networks.

Gardaí arrested a man in his 50s on Thursday and brought him to Kevin Street Garda Station for questioning. On Thursday night, the Garda Press Office announced that the man had been formally charged in connection with the assault. The defendant is scheduled to appear before the Dublin District Court at the Criminal Courts of Justice on Friday morning at 10:30am, while gardaí maintain that their investigation remains active.
